Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Gulshan Grover, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, Jamie Lever, Girish Kulkarni, Simran Ashwini, director Nagraj Manjule, producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, writer Abhay Pannu and Nikhil Madhok, Head of Indian Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, attended the trailer launch of their web series, Matka King, in Mumbai. Vijay Varma was in his element as he raised laughs with his quick-witted humour. A journalist asked him about the interesting coincidence with his Gully Boy (2019) co-star Ranveer Singh and how both played characters named Hamza.
Vijay Varma smiled and replied, “I guess you’re referring to Hamza, the character Ranveer Singh played in Dhurandhar (2025), while I also played the character of the same name in Darlings (2022). It's just a coincidence and an interesting piece of movie trivia now!”
He continued, “Gully Boy was a significant film in my life. I was down in the dumps when that film happened to me. It saved me and gave me a career. So, I am very thankful to be a part of that film. Ranveer is one of the finest co-actors I have worked with. As Hamza, he has hit it out of the park.”
He ended the answer with a killer line, “So, I’d just say, when life throws a Hamza at you, make it Dhurandhar’s Hamza, not Darlings’ Hamza (laughs)!”
Later, Vijay Varma talked about his experience working with Nagraj Manjule, “It was my dream to work with him. When he offered me Matka King, I was in disbelief, wondering why he signed me because inko toh actor ki zarurat hi nahin hai. He cast non-actors in Fandry (2014). He launched two leads in Sairat (2016) and they had never acted before. In Jhund (2022), apart from Mr Bachchan, the rest of the cast comprised rank newcomers. I believe that non-actors have worked so well in his movies that I feared I’d be exposed; meri acting pakdi jaayegi! Hence, I had to unlearn a lot to work with this gentleman here. He’s one of the finest we have. I can’t wait to do more work with him.”
He then looked at Nagraj Manjule and said, “Sir, if I did okay, let's work again!”
Matka King releases on Amazon Prime Video on April 17.
