Netflix has finally dropped the first trailer for their upcoming film adaptation of Roald Dahl classic Matilda the Musical.

Alisha Weir stars as six-year-old Matilda, a little girl with “big curiosity, a sharp mind, a vivid imagination, and truly horrible parents.” Set to debut this December on Netflix, the musical features a stellar cast, with Emma Thompson starring as the cruel Miss Trunchbull and Lashana Lynch as the lovely Miss Honey, Steven Graham as the sleazy Mr. Wormwood and Andrea Riseborough in the role of Mrs. Wormwood.

Matilda finds comfort and inspiration in the classroom of her only role model, her sweet teacher Miss Honey but other authority figures are not as kind. The school, known as Crunchem Hall, is ruled by the headmaster, the monstrous Miss Trunchbull. Miss Honey encourages Matilda to use her vivid imagination and maintain her curiosity, despite Trunchbull’s demands to get rid of all the “rebels” at Crunchem Hall.

The synopsis to the film reads, "Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical is an inspirational musical tale of an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and summons the remarkable courage, against all odds, to help others change their stories, whilst also taking charge of her own destiny.”

The Matilda adaptation reportedly comes as a part of Netflix’s deal with the Roald Dahl Story Company. Signed last year, the partnership promises a new series in the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from Taika Waititi along with Matilda The Musical.

Written by Dennis Kelly, the film is produced by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan alongside Jon Finn and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company, songs and music from the musical adaptation by Tim Minchin are also being used in the film.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical premieres this holiday season on Netflix, with a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland December 2. Watch the trailer below!
