Manoj Bajpayee has weighed in on the growing trend of filmmakers highlighting massive production budgets as a major promotional tool, stating that audiences should focus more on the quality of a film than on the money spent making it. The discussion comes at a time when large-scale projects such as Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana and SS Rajamouli's Varanasi are making headlines for their reported budgets. While Ramayana has been linked with figures ranging from Rs 1,600 crores to nearly Rs 4,000 crores for its two-part saga, reports suggest that Varanasi could be mounted on a budget exceeding Rs 1,300 crores.
During a recent conversation with Kadak, Manoj Bajpayee was asked about the attention these numbers generate and whether budget figures are increasingly being used to build anticipation around films. Responding to the question, the actor said, “Woh ek PR ka zariya hota hai (This is a PR tactic), because this kind of talk has been happening for the last 15 years."
The actor went on to explain how discussions around budgets and box office collections have become deeply ingrained in public conversations about cinema. “This has become so infectious that sometimes any audience member who meets me at the airport they start talking about the numbers of a film. I have often scolded them, saying that ‘This money is not going into your own bank account. If this is going in your bank account, then you talk about the box office numbers of a film. You should talk about whether you like the film or not,’” he said.
According to Bajpayee, viewers should evaluate films based on their experience rather than financial metrics. He further added, “‘These Rs 500-600 crores that they are talking about, not even one rupee is being given to you.’ So the audience have to understand that their only connection to the film is whether they like it or not; other things shouldn’t matter to them. A film’s business is only a producer’s prerogative."
Meanwhile, Manoj Bajpayee is currently promoting his upcoming film, Governor. Inspired by true events, the film is set against the backdrop of India's economic crisis in the 1990s. Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the drama explores political and institutional conflicts during a crucial period in the country's history.
The film features music by Amit Trivedi and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Governor is scheduled to release in cinemas on June 12, 2026.
