MAMAMOO turns 8: From ‘Decalcomanie’ to ‘Starry Night’, eight tracks that solidifies their strength as a powerhouse female group

South Korean female group MAMAMOO marks their eight-year debut anniversary on June 19, 2022. The four-member girl group consisting of Solar, Moonbyul, Whee In and Hwasa made waves with their jazzy R&B music.Each member carries their own strength and brings it together in the group. The group is known for their lyrics and artistry with each new music release. What makes the group stand out of the crowd is that they are not shy to embrace their true selves as musicians. From creating funky pop music to calling out haters and promoting self-love, the group had done it all with a promise of more in the coming years. While member Wheein is no longer a part of RBW, she continues to remain a member of the quartet. On the occasion of MAMAMOO’s eight-year debut anniversary, here are some of the memorable tracks by the powerhouse girl group.

1. DECALCOMANIE
It is a song about pure attraction. The vintage setting, the building mystery and the absolute dangerous risk create an eye-catching visual in the music video. There is a rising progression towards the chorus and it then settles into a familiar ebb and flow of vocals and instrumentals.

2. DINGGA
It is that song which reflected the loneliness caused by the pandemic and the subsequent need to get out and live an exciting life. The song is full of pop elements as the members croon about drinking and going out with friends.

3. EGOTISTIC
‘Egotistic’ is a song about a toxic relationship. The lovers keep on fighting. The song is about letting the partner go and living life on their own terms. The members use their stark vocals and create an impactful song.

4. GOGOBEBE
‘Gogobebe’ is one of the most colourful tracks of MAMAMOO. The song promotes the idea of “It’s okay not to be okay” and makes an agreeable argument at it. The members are show in their own world of boredom, and the songs make a compelling bargain to go out and enjoy. The funk pop elements in the track make it an upbeat number.

5. HIP
‘HIP’ by MAMAMOO is a bold and provocative song. The song calls out the naysayers and celebrates their unique identity. The retro jazz tones added with a splash of hip hop makes the song quite a catchy number.

6. MR. AMBIGUOUS
MAMAMOO’s debut track ‘Mr. Ambiguous’ remains iconic till date. The song has jazz and retro influences with adequate black and white frames to bring in nostalgia. The song also features cameos by Lee Jong Hyun, Wheesung and Bumkey. MAMAMOO had shown their artistry right from their debut.

7. WANNA BE MYSELF
The title ‘Wanna Be Myself’ is quite self-explanatory. The quartet sings about being themselves and not caring what the world says. The song makes use of hip hop elements and R&B tones.

8. STARRY NIGHT
Starry Night is a song that reminisces the many nights spent in the arms of a lover. The guitar riffs at the start, chorus and end add a fast-paced vibe to the song. The smooth R&B notes accompanied with the group’s breathy vocals cast a dreamy vibe in the song.

From Mr. Ambiguous to Wanna Be Myself, MAMAMOO has come a long way. Over the years, the group has shown their skills and honed them to perfection. Each member also embarked on their solo careers and showed their unique identity in those releases. MAMAMOO faced a lot of ups and downs in their career, but they have emerged successful every time.
