Actor Madhuri Dixit, one of Bollywood’s biggest stars through the 1990s, enjoyed a remarkable career before moving to the United States after marrying Dr. Shriram Nene. At the peak of her stardom, her decision to relocate surprised many. After spending almost ten years in the US, Madhuri and her family eventually returned to India. In a recent conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, the actor opened up about the real reasons behind the move back home.

Madhuri Dixit on why she returned to India from the US
Reflecting on her life in America, Madhuri said she cherished the calm and simplicity it offered. She described those years as peaceful and fulfilling, especially because she was able to spend uninterrupted time with her young children. According to her, it felt like she was living a dream, both as a mother and as a wife.
However, the decision to return to India was influenced by multiple factors. Madhuri shared, “A lot of things happened. My parents were living with me; all my siblings were in the US. Even Ram’s family is there. My parents were getting older, and they wanted to come back to India. All my life and career, they were with me, and I didn’t want to leave them alone.”
She further explained that managing her professional commitments from abroad had become increasingly challenging. “My work was here. I used to come to India, do my work, and then go back to the US. That was becoming very difficult because of the distance,” she said.
Madhuri added that her husband also felt a strong pull toward India. Dr. Nene, who is a cardiovascular surgeon, wanted to focus on preventive healthcare and help people detect problems early. “He wanted to develop a system to make people healthy and look after their wellness. We both thought that maybe this was a calling, because everything was falling into place,” she said. Madhuri admitted that she missed India during her time abroad and felt that returning was the right decision for both her career and her family.

Although they were introduced by her brother, Madhuri recently revealed that the two dated for six months before deciding to get married. The couple welcomed their sons Arin in 2003 and Ryan in 2005.
