There was a time when action, comedy and love stories ruled the roost at the box office. But things have changed this year. Munjya was the sleeper super-hit of 2024, which crossed the Rs. 100 crores mark, surprising the trade and industry. The industry then got a bigger surprise when Stree 2 emerged as the biggest Bollywood hit of all time. Both were horror comedies and incidentally, both were produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films. The trade experts are all praise for Maddock Films, which also produced a few more films in this genre like Stree (2018), Bhediya (2022). All these films are connected as well and is a part of a well-planned cinematic universe.
We asked trade experts if it is fair to say that Maddock is the Marvel of Bollywood’s horror comedies. Trade analyst Atul Mohan answered, “Yes, definitely. They made a fantastic cinematic universe. Nobody could have thought ki aisa bhi ek universe ban sakta hai. Jab insaano ki duniya ban sakti hai, toh bhooton ki bhi toh duniya bhi ban sakti hai (smiles).”
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh replied along the same lines saying, “Maddock is at the top of the game. Look at the kind of content they are making. It’s an untapped that they got into. At the same time, they are building various brands.”
He also praised producer Dinesh Vijan saying, “Waqt se juda hua aadmi hai woh. He trusted his product completely. When you don’t trust your product, how will you make people confident that your film is nice?”
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal Raj Bansal exulted, “Their films have been very successful in the horror comedy genre. Hence, they have created a universe as it’s the most in thing today. However, Hindi cinema is not focused on content. The makers are busy making sequels. The day somebody manages to make a well-made original film, he or she will hit a sixer. Most of the announcements are sequels or prequels. Koi original story pe seriously kaam hi nahin kar raha. They are still avoiding music, strong content, etc, and they lack good directors to helm the affairs.”
Taran Adarsh signed off by saying, “Earlier, we used to talk about Yash Raj Films, Excel Entertainment and Dharma Productions. Maddock Films was always there but out of the blue, it has become a force to reckon with. You are as good or bad as your last Friday and look at the last few Fridays of Dinesh Vijan! I keep telling them, ‘This is your Sholay moment’! After all, Stree 2 is breaking all records left, right and centre.”
