Back in the 90s, ‘Ruk Ruk Ruk’ was a massive chartbusters. The song picturised on Tabu was a runaway success and continues to play on even though more than a couple of decades have passed by. Now in 2018 too, the song has emerged a very good success, especially with Kajol bringing in the moves all over again in her latest release Helicopter Eela.
That said, when it comes to the recreation of any song in Bollywood films today, it is typically for the one which was picturised on an actress from an earlier generation. Here it was for a song that was originally picturised on Tabu, who was Kajol’s contemporary back in the 90s and beyond. How was that experience?
“It was fab,” says Kajol, “Tabu and I go back a long way. She is amazing, I love her and she loves me back. Hum dono ki dosti kaafi achchi hai. Whenever we meet, we do with a lot of affection. I absolutely love the song. Jo yeh gaana humne chuna hai we wanted it to be absolutely typical of the 90s. The first five seconds itself transport you to that 90s era. ‘Ruk Ruk’ perfectly fitted the bill. And then of course since Ajay ka gaana tha (from Vijaypath) so we knew that easy bhi hoga lene ke liye. Most importantly it suited the film very well. The fact we are showing that she is an aspiring singer so the song went well with the film’s narrative as well.”
What is also going really well is the way Kajol looks today, 26 years after making her debut as a teenager in Bekhudi. No wonder, from 1992 to 2000 to 2010 and now in 2018, she is looking better and better. How is she able to do that?
“Oh yes, I believe that myself,” laughs Kajol, “Aisa mujhe bhi lagta hai. But honestly, I have never sat down and thought about it. Aisa nahi ki main baithi aur iss baare mein sochne lagi. I guess it is about when you are happy and when your life is balanced, it all comes naturally. When you don’t have to think only about one thing which is either about your life or your career then it all happens well. I guess I have also grown as a person. I am much happier than I was as a 16 year old. I guess that’s what shows on your face when you are at peace. I love my life. I love myself, and that shows.”
