Filmmaker Kunal Kohli has revealed that several prominent directors in the film industry were skeptical about the box office prospects of Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, even as the film went on to post strong numbers. Speaking about the response within the industry, Kohli said many filmmakers believed the film would lose momentum soon after its opening weekend.
“Even when the industry doesn't support a film, the film still works. Nobody supported Dhurandhar. The biggest directors I spoke to said, ‘Monday ko baith jayegi. Monday ko aur chal gayi’,” he told the Indian Express’ Screen, adding that the film instead performed better after Monday.
According to Kohli, the film’s trajectory demonstrated that industry opinion does not determine a movie’s commercial fate.
Filmmaker cites Border 2 as another example
Kohli also pointed to Border 2 while discussing how predictions about box office performance can sometimes miss the mark. “Nobody supported Border 2. People said second week mein thoda baith gayi. It's done Rs 300 crore plus. What are you saying! That's a blockbuster. End of discussion. It doesn't matter if the industry supports you or not,” he said.

Weeks earlier, Kohli had also shared a video on social media congratulating director Aditya Dhar, Ranveer Singh and Jio Studios for the film’s performance at the box office. He further described the film as an example of the potential of locally rooted storytelling.
“It has shown us the true potential of the Indian box office. Phenomenal. It has shown us that desi subjects and stories work like nothing else. Let's not be influenced by western subjects and ideas; let's make desi films,” he added.

Kohli also spoke about what he believes audiences are responding to in films like Dhurandhar. “Heroes ko mard hona chahiye. Hindi films ke heroes ko mard hona chahiye. Not some lost, confused boy. That's what Saiyaara was. That's what Dhurandhar is. Look at the numbers. Genuine collection,” he said.
“Fake collections kar ke bhi you are not doing 100 crores for the entire lifetime collection of your film. This is doing 100 crores a day with genuine collections. Thank you Aditya Dhar, Ranveer Singh, Jio Studios for showing us the way and the potential of our cinema,” Kohli concluded.
