Koffee With Karan 8: Sharmila Tagore reveals that she wasn’t the first choice for the iconic Rajesh Khanna starrer Aradhana

The recent episode of Koffee With Karan 8 saw Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore giving audiences a sneak peek into their mother-son bond.

At Koffee With Karan 8, we have seen several celebrities from Deepika Padukone to Kiara Advani sharing their heartfelt stories and doing the same will be Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore who will be debuting together on the couch in the upcoming episode of the chat show, hosted by Karan Johar. In the episode, as Saif and Sharmila discussed their personal and professional life, the latter opened up about her iconic film Aradhana starring Rajesh Khanna.

Sharmila Tagore was seen playing the titular character of Aradhana in 1969 film and she left everyone surprised when she revealed on the Koffee that she was not the initial choice for the role. In fact, she went on to add that she fought to prove why she was perfect for the role, and now, it's hard to imagine anyone else doing it better. Talking about it, Sharmila Tagore said, “I chose Aradhana, rather fought for Aradhana. Shakti (Samanta) Ji said, ‘We are thinking of somebody else’.” “Your image has been scarred?” asked Karan Johar.

Sharmila Tagore continued, “No, he didn't say that. He was very fond of me. But he felt that I was too young and said, ‘I won't be able to do it’. But Sachin, the screenplay writer was a friend. He kind of said, ‘Yes, I think we can do it’. So, there was much debate. And in any case, they were making a big film with Shammi ji. And with Shammi ji they were having problems with his dates. Because of that, all of this happened very quickly.”

Karan Johar quipped about the immense fame Aradhana garnered as he hailed, “What a blockbuster. Oh my God. What a blockbuster.” “It ran for 50 weeks.”, added Sharmila Tagore
