Bollywood couple Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan have often found themselves in the spotlight for their personal life choices, especially when it comes to naming their children. While they previously faced controversy over their son's name, Taimur, Kareena recently opened up about the decision and the couple's approach to handling criticism.Kareena Kapoor reveals meaning behind son Taimur’s name and how Saif Ali Khan and she faced criticism; says, “I don’t think any mother or child has to go through that”
Speaking at the Express Adda event on Monday, Kareena shared the backstory behind her elder son's name. She explained, “When we came up with the name, Saif actually said...He grew up with a neighbour friend, and he always really liked his name and his name was Taimur, so he said, ‘You know, if I have a son, he was my first friend. I’d like to name him Taimur’, and that’s exactly how Taimur was named, because he was Saif’s first friend when he was living in town here. We looked it up and it means 'iron', and I said if I have a boy, I always want him to be as strong as iron man.”
Kareena was reminded that her sister, Karisma Kapoor, had mentioned in an interview that Kareena howled in the hospital room when she learned that her son was being criticized online just after his birth due to his name. Reflecting on that challenging time, Kareena added, “I don’t think any mother or any child has to go through that. What was the reason...I still don’t really get it, because nobody is meant to offend anyone or do anything. I think we have freedom of speech, freedom of what we want to do, at least both Saif and me believe that very strongly.”
She clarified that the name had no connection to any historical figure and emphasized that it was not intended to resemble anything or anyone. Despite the negativity they faced, Kareena and Saif handled the situation with grace and dignity, choosing not to respond to the criticism directly.
She mentioned that Taimur was one of the most photographed children at the time for reasons she couldn't fathom. “I got into a bit of a shock when this happened. But luckily, I think because of us being strong and resilient and silent, I think it just kind of died down. He was the most photographed child for what reason I have no idea. It was a traumatic time, but I think both Saif and me handled it with a lot of dignity because we never actually spoke, or said anything. We just believed in what we did, and we just believed in naming our child just a beautiful name,” Kareena shared.
Meanwhile, on the film front, Kareena will be soon seen in Sujoy Ghosh, Jaane Jaan which is a Hindi adaptation of Japanese author Higashino Keigo's bestselling novel, ‘The Devotion of Suspect X,’ published in 2005. This thriller is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on September 21. She is also set to share the screen with Tabu and Kriti Sanon in The Crew, a film that is reportedly scheduled for release in March 2024.
