As Kareena Kapoor Khan is celebrating her 25th year in the Indian film industry, she reminisced about a particularly memorable moment from her career: the screening of her 2006 film, Omkara. Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, the film was a critically acclaimed adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello.
Kareena Kapoor Khan recalls Omkara screening where Saif Ali Khan was highly praised; acknowledges co-stars’ significance: “In great films like Jab We Met…”At the time, Kapoor was brimming with confidence in her performance. She had called upon a host of directors, including the legendary Mani Ratnam, to witness her portrayal of Desdemona, a role she believed she had nailed. Her co-stars, including Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn, Naseeruddin Shah, and Bipasha Basu, were also present. “I had a trial and I called everybody. It's such a good performance so I called all the directors, from Mani Ratnam to everyone. I wanted to call all the directors and show them this film because I'd done really well in the film. So, I had this trial, and everybody was there, of course Vishal and Koko (Konkona Sensharma) and Vivek (Oberoi), and Saif was also there. I was excited that they're going to watch me as Desdemona (Othello character from which her Omkara role was adapted). Shakespeare didn't write too many female characters. So, Dolly Mishra was such a special character,” Kareena recalled at the launch event in Mumbai earlier this week.
However, Kapoor's expectations for a standing ovation were met with a surprising twist. During the intermission, the directors and fellow actors offered praise, but their focus was on the entire ensemble cast. When the film concluded, Kapoor was taken aback by the overwhelming enthusiasm for her co-star, Saif Ali Khan. She added, “In the interval, everyone came out and said, ‘You’re really nice, really nice. We loved everyone. Saif was amazing.' And then the movie ended. And everyone was like, ‘(Gasps) You were fab, but where’s Saif, where's Saif?' I was like, ‘What is happening? I called everyone to praise me and suddenly, everyone has just flocked to Saif.’ I have to credit a lot of my films to my co-actors.”
Reflecting on the incident, Kapoor acknowledged the significance of her co-actors in her career. She emphasized that actors feed off each other's energy, and great films like Jab We Met and Omkara were a result of this synergy. Kapoor expressed gratitude to her co-stars, including Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots, for their contributions to her success. Kareena continued, “Actors bounce off each other's energies. In great films like Jab We Met and Omkara, we've always bounced off each other's energies. Whether it was Aamir (Khan) in 3 Idiots, you also need to take from them. So, I also want to take this opportunity to thank all my actors in all these wonderful films. Without them, none of these films would be what they are, whether it's Jab We Met, Omkara, or Asoka (co-starring Shah Rukh Khan).”
On the work front, Kareena Kapoor Khan was last seen in The Buckingham Murders, which is currently running in theatres.
