Kareena Kapoor Khan believes The Buckingham Murders is ‘career-defining’ for her: “It’s probably one of my best characters”

Anticipation has been building for the Hansal Mehta-directed film, The Buckingham Murders, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan. Even before its official release in theatres, the film had its special screenings at the BFI London Film Festival 2023 and Jio MAMI Film Festival 2023. While the film will have a theatrical release, it will also be released on Netflix for streaming after the cinema run.

During a recent discussion on Netflix’s The Actors’ Roundtable 2023, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared insights into her role. Narrating the storyline of the film, she revealed, “I just did a film with Hansal Mehta which is going to come on Netflix after the theatres. It’s called The Buckingham Murders where I play a grieving mother. Her child gets shot in the first scene of the film and she is a detective. And she is been given the case. She runs away from this town, then she goes to this town and she is been given the case.”

Kareena Kapoor added, “I think I loved playing that part because this is the first time I am playing a detective and I am a huge crime drama fan. But somehow I just found that it was just deeply disturbing and after a point. I just felt that I didn't want to know her because she was just so unhappy and so grieving. After a point, I was just like I want to go home.”

She said, “The character that I played now in The Buckingham Murders, the grief made it a lot uncomfortable but it also gave me a lot of joy. So not every character that makes you uncomfortable, you have to dislike. You may dislike it for the pain you feel. But for me, it is a career-defining role. It’s one of my best characters. I told Hansal let’s make it into four parts as I don’t want to let go of the character but at the same time, her grief is so painful and hard to revisit. It’s probably one of my best characters that I want to keep doing with Hansal.”

The official synopsis of the film reads, “Fresh wounds are reopened when Jasmeet Bhamra, a cop and single mother who recently lost her child in a shooting spree, transfers to High Wycombe and is assigned the case of a missing child. Director Hansal Mehta explores themes of trauma, closure and the immigrant experience with his signature sensitivity in this atmospheric thriller, featuring a career-best performance by Kapoor.”

Written by Aseem Arora, Raghav Raj Kakker, and Kashyap Kapoor, the film is co-produced by Balaji Telefilms and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
