Released in 2001, multi-starrer Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is indeed one of the most loved family dramas. The Karan Johar directorial gave a bunch of memorable scenes and dialogues, and of course characters, especially Poo (played by Kareena Kapoor Khan). But, how would you react if we tell you that Poo’s character was quite unpopular on the sets? In fact, Kareena’s father and actor Randhir Kapoor had said that she’d come off looking like Johnny Lever in the film. Not only this, even Shah Rukh Khan thought that Karan Johar got carried away with the character.

Well, KJo has himself revealed the above. It all happened during his recent appearance in Anupama Chopra’s All About Movies podcast. During their conversation, when pointed out that K3G’s dialogues are still popular, Johar asserted, “When I look back, I wonder if PHAT was even a thing, or did I create it? Somebody will have to tell me. Because in 2001, when I had written those dialogues and she was mouthing them, nobody laughed on set. Only I was laughing behind the monitor, and she was laughing rendering those lines.”

The 50-year-old filmmaker further added, “No one, literally no one got what we were doing. At one point, Shah Rukh took me aside and said, ‘I think you’re getting carried away with this, because I don’t think she’s funny’… I remember her telling me that Daboo uncle called her and told her, ‘You’re playing some version of Johnny Lever in this film, you’re a comedian with lines nobody laughed at’. We thought we had epically failed with the character.”

Later, Karan stated that Poo was “ahead of her time,” while admitting that the character wasn’t original, and was “fully derivative” of Alicia Silverstone’s character from the film Clueless.
