Filmmaker Karan Johar continued to share candid moments as he debuted at the Met Gala 2026, offering insights into his preparation and mindset before stepping onto the red carpet.
In a conversation with E! Entertainment, Johar was asked if he had practised walking up the iconic steps of the venue in his elaborate outfit. Responding with humour, he said, “All the practice you can do in this garment is not going to serve anything at all, because eventually... this is beautiful baggage to carry on your shoulders.” His remark highlighted both the scale and structure of his look, while acknowledging the challenges that come with wearing couture on such a global stage.
Johar’s comments came shortly after he spoke about his long-standing association with fashion and the significance of attending the Met Gala for the first time. Having begun his career as a costume designer, he described the moment as a full-circle experience. He also recalled how his early exposure to fashion through magazines like Vogue shaped his interest in style and design.
Speaking about the importance of the event, Johar had earlier said that the Met Gala is more than just a red carpet. He described it as a platform that celebrates fashion as an art form and a space where creativity, craftsmanship and storytelling come together. He also noted that representing India at such an event carries added meaning, especially as Indian fashion continues to gain global recognition.
When asked what he would say to Anna Wintour, the long-time chair of the Met Gala, Johar kept his response brief. “That's all. I am here. That's all,” he said, suggesting a sense of quiet confidence ahead of the event.
Johar also revealed earlier that his outfit for the evening was designed by Manish Malhotra, a long-time collaborator and close friend. Their association, which spans several films, adds a personal dimension to Johar’s Met Gala appearance.
