Akshay Kumar, Madhoo, Vishnu Manchu and Mukesh Kumar Singh attended the teaser launch of the Pan-India film Kannappa in Mumbai. Akshay, as expected, rocked the show with his quotes.
Akshay Kumar, who plays Lord Shiva in the film, began by saying, “I am very fortunate that I have got such opportunities. In OMG! Oh My God (2012), I got a chance to play the role of Lord Krishna. In OMG 2 (2023), I played Shiv ji and again, I am playing Shiv ji in Kannappa. It is so rare for an actor to get a chance to play such divine roles.”
He then shared a fascinating tale saying, “When my father was transferred to Mumbai, he was once approached by a man who asked him, ‘Bhai saab, aap acting karoge?’. My father worked in the army, was 6.1 feet tall and was a wrestler; he was shocked by this offer. Nevertheless, he agreed. They took him to the set and believe it or not, he was asked to wear Lord Shiva’s costume (smiles). The role was just 5 or 10 seconds though. It’s a great coincidence that his son also got to play the same role.”
Earlier, Vishnu Manchu revealed that Akshay Kumar rejected Kannappa not once but twice. On this, Akshay Kumar said, “As he said, I turned down the role twice. Now, let me explain the reason behind it. I didn’t know Vishnu ji. I know his father (Mohan Babu) for sure. But someone from Vishnu’s team called. And that person didn’t contact him. He contacted Sudha Kongara Prasad ma’am (who directed Akshay’s 2024 film Sarfira). There are times when actors or their managers get hoax calls (and hence I turned the offer down).”
Kannappa also stars Prabhas as Rudra and Mohanlal as Kirata. It releases in cinemas on April 25.
