Kangana Ranaut weighs in on India's name change discourse.

In a recent social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut once again voiced her support for the idea of renaming India to Bharat. The actress reminded her followers that she had initially shared her thoughts on this matter two years ago and continues to stand firmly behind her perspective.

Ranaut argued that the citizens of the country were labelled “Indians” during the British colonial era, and she believes this identity was imposed upon the nation. She further asserted that the name “Bharat” held profound significance, while the term “India” lacked a meaningful historical or cultural connection. To emphasize her commitment to this cause, Kangana Ranaut re-shared a screenshot of her 2021 statement on her Instagram Stories. In her previous statement, she had advocated for a departure from the name “India” and advocated for the adoption of the name “Bharat” to better reflect the country's heritage and identity.

Additionally, Ranaut shared a fan's post on X praising her forward-thinking stance. She responded with a touch of humour, stating, “And some call it black magic …. It’s simply Grey matter honey (similing face emoticon) Congratulations to everyone!! Freed from a slave name … Jai Bharat.”

In her latest update on the microblogging platform, Kangana Ranaut posted a comprehensive message chronicling the historical evolution of the name over time. She penned a detailed note on the subject saying, “What is there to love in this name? First of all they couldn’t pronounce ‘Sindhu’ toh usko bigad ke ‘ Indus’ kar diya. Phir kabhi Hindos kabhi Indos kuch bhi gol mol karke India bana diya. (They turned Sindhu into Indus. Then Hindos became Indos) From the time of Mahabharata, all the kingdoms who participated in the Great War of Kurukshetra came under one continent called Bharat so why were they calling us Indu Sindu??”

She further added, “Also the name Bharat is so meaningful, what is the meaning of India ? I know they called Red Indians that because in olden English Indian simply meant a slave, they named us Indians because that was our new identity given to us by British. Even in olden days dictionary Indian’s meaning was mentioned as slave they recently changed it. Also it’s not our name we are Bhartiya not Indians.”

Meanwhile, coming to the film front, Kangana was last seen in Dhaakad, which also featured Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta. The film performed poorly at the box office. Currently, Ranaut is awaiting the release of her next film, which is also her second directorial venture, Emergency. Based on the 1975 Indian Emergency, the ensemble star cast also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry and Milind Soman in pivotal roles. It was slated to release on October 20. However, to avoid a clash with Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon’s Ganapath, Kangana cancelled the release. Ranaut has said that she will announce the release date a month prior along with its trailer in a tweet.
