We all know how Kabir Singh is in the midst of storm, facing allegations of promoting and celebrating toxic masculinity. And now we have, Shahid Kapoor who has exclusively spoken to Bollywood Hungama and has come out in support of the film and is reacting to all the hoopla around the Arjun Reddy remake. The actor, in clear words, has stated that the film has won audiences and that it needs to be viewed as purely cinema. He has also mentioned that if one hates his character Kabir Singh, then it means that it has been successful because they have intended to make it in a way where people shouldn’t like the character. As he describes more about putting across a flawed character like Kabir Singh, Shahid made a reference to the character of Sanju portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor in the Sanjay Dutt biopic.
Sanju, that portrayed a glimpse of the life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, dealt with some bad phases of his life including his drug addiction, womanizing ways etc. The film too featured a flawed character as its main lead and Shahid Kapoor compared the same to his character Kabir Singh. “There was a film called Sanju that was released last year and I loved that film. The character had all the same problems [like Kabir Singh]. In front of his wife, he is telling a random interviewer, that I have slept with 310 women and I don’t remember the rest. He takes the toilet pot-seat and puts it on Sonam Kapoor’s neck saying, ‘this is your mangalsutra’. I loved the film because that is the headspace of the character. Therefore his behaviour cannot be constructed and restricted. He needs to do what he needs to do and you can choose to say that I hate this guy.”
Shahid Kapoor further went on to speak about how Kabir Singh, similarly, is a flawed character and the readers may not necessarily fall in love with a hero and hate a villain. Kabir is merely the protagonist and the audiences can hate him too for who he is.
Kabir Singh, which is a remake of Arjun Reddy, was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The film released earlier this month, on July 12 and it also features Kiara Advani as the leading lady.
