There is no denying that screenwriter duo Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan ruled the entire 70’s decade as they gave 21 iconic stories together including Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, and Don. However, the Anil Kapoor starrer Mr India reportedly turned out to be a major reason for their fallout. Speaking of the same, Javed Akhtar recently shed some light on their rift and recalled how their iconic partnership commenced.

It all happened during Javed’s recent chat with BBC Hindi. Talking about their fallout after working together for 11 years, Akhtar asserted, “In our earlier unsuccessful days, we were struggling, we were one. We did not have any other friends, we would work together from morning to evening. We would even have dinner together. Out of 24, we would spend 15-16 hours together.”

He further added, “When we became successful, new people came into our lives and our circles got separated. The mental rapport we had, got broken. We could no longer work together.”

During the conversation, Javed Akhtar also briefly discussed how their friendship flourished over the years. He stated that Salim was one of the very few people who would encourage him. He said, “If I was living elsewhere, we might have not met this often but my room was close by, so I would often end up at his house.”

Javed reminisced that he and Salim would sit by the sea for hours and that’s where they would come up with story ideas. Talking about their first writing gig as ghostwriters, which paid them Rs 5000, Javed said that it felt as if they won a jackpot. He also mentioned that they never planned to become partners, but it happened gradually.

For the unversed, the former writer duo had reportedly approached Amitabh Bachchan for the lead role in Mr India. However, Bachchan declined the offer, which said to have created a misunderstanding between the two.
