Imtiaz Ali, one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed directors, is known for his distinctive storytelling and immersive narratives. His films create unforgettable characters that leave a lasting impact on audiences. One such iconic character is Kareena Kapoor’s Geet from Jab We Met, a role that remains a fan favourite.
During his recent appearance on Komal Nahta’s Game Changers podcast, the director spoke about how he had visualized characters and his visualization for the character Geet. Imitiaz told Komal Nahta, “Let’s take Jab We Met as an example, since many people have seen it. When I’m writing, I have a picture in my head. I always had this girl in mind – her body language, but her face wasn’t clear, it was a little blurry.”
He further added, “Her way of talking, her style, her vibe – it was all in my head. Sometimes, I’d even clearly see her wearing yellow and sitting somewhere, saying, “I’m running away.” It’s hazy, but when you meet people, you see if their spirit or body language matches that character.
Revealing how Kareena was his first choice, he said, “You might feel that this person doesn't have the exact face or build I imagined, but their inner spark is the same. I always wanted Kareena for this role, and at first, she wasn't interested. But later, she joined the film, and it worked out perfectly. She was my first choice.
With Game Changers, Komal Nahta is set to redefine the landscape of Indian cinema conversations. Tune in to the YouTube channel for Game Changers.
