The actor reflected on the industry rivalry, creative individuality, and his comeback journey after a decade-long hiatus.

Actor Imran Khan is stepping back into the spotlight with a renewed perspective, addressing long-standing narratives around competition in Bollywood. In a recent interview, the actor spoke candidly about being frequently compared to his contemporary Ranbir Kapoor and shared his views on the industry’s fixation with box office metrics.

Appearing on The Right Angle with Sonal Kalra (Season 3), produced by Gautam Thakker Films, Imran reflected on how the early phase of his career was shaped by constant comparisons. During the late 2000s, both actors were often labelled as part of the “chocolate boy” era, with media narratives framing their journeys as a rivalry driven by box office numbers and fan following.

Addressing this perception, Imran made it clear that he never subscribed to the idea of creative competition. He said, “I had never bought into the notion of creative competition. It again reduces cinema and our art form into some kind of a competitive sport and I don’t see that as doing full justice to the films that we make.”

He further elaborated on how the emotional value of cinema cannot be measured through numbers alone. “Someone may be emotionally moved by a film, someone may not. That’s fine. But measuring it as a metric of numbers, I have never bought into that. I don’t really subscribe to that”, he added.

Imran Khan’s return comes after a self-imposed break that began following his 2015 film Katti Batti. Over the years, he built a loyal fan base with films like Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, I Hate Luv Storys, Delhi Belly, and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, which showcased his signature “boy-next-door” appeal.

His resurgence began with nostalgic social media activity in late 2024, which gradually built momentum for his comeback. In 2026, Imran has officially returned to acting, headlining a high-profile OTT series directed by Abbas Tyrewala—the filmmaker who launched him in Bollywood. He also made a brief appearance in Happy Patel, a quirky feature produced by Aamir Khan, marking the directorial debut of Vir Das, who also plays the lead role.

With his latest statements, Imran Khan appears to be positioning his second innings in the industry on his own terms—focusing on storytelling and artistic expression rather than box office comparisons. His comments also reflect a broader conversation within the industry about redefining success beyond numbers, as actors increasingly seek creative satisfaction over competitive benchmarks.
