The Thespian Dilip Kumar's brothers Ahsaan and Aslam Khan are embroiled in a bitter property dispute with their legendary star-brother, claiming rights over his Pali Hill bungalow.
Opening up on the sensitive hurtful topic for the first time, the Thespian's beautiful and utterly devoted wife Saira Banu says, "They have no right over my husband's bungalow. No one does. It's not ancestral property. It is the home that my husband bought with his own hard-earned money."
To be subjected to complicated legal procedures by family is profoundly painful for the Thespian and his wife."
Says the troubled wife, "My husband's brothers have brought so much pain to us. Yusuf Saab and I have never wished anyone anything but the best. We've gone out of our way to try to be kind considerable helpful. Then why are we suffering this way? We've always prayed for the well-being of our friends and well-wishers. Now I wish them to pray for us, so we'd be rid of this stressful situation in our lives."
Sairaji says she nurses no ill will against her husband's two brothers in spite of the pain and embarrassment that have brought on the couple at this stage of their lives. "They've created so much unnecessary and unwarranted tamasha. To be receiving court summons and legal notices from such close family members is not nice. Some time ago they got themselves admitted into a municipal hospital merely to show the world they were too poor to afford decent medical treatment. What is the need for this kind of behaviour? And still whenever they are in our home I've never been lax in my hospitality. I see my husband's lineage in his brothers. And I treat them with the respect that my husband's brothers deserve irrespective of their behaviour towards us. We've done all that we could for my brothers-in-law. Now please let us live in peace."
The gracious and articulate Sairaji reiterates the Pali Hill bungalow belongs only to her husband. "It's built with his money. Not even our money. By God's grace I come from a well-to-do family and have had a successful career as an actress. But the home that I built for my husband and I with such care over the years was paid for by my husband only."
Looking back at her wonderful marriage, Sairaji sighs, "My life changed completely the day I married this amazing man. Before marriage I was a pampered daughter who bathed in besan every evening and lived a fairytale existence. Today after 44 years of marriage, I run around the house bare feet making sure my husband is comfortable. He is my world. And I won't allow anyone to disrupt or disturb my world."
