The Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer Tamasha (2015) underperformed at the box office but has achieved a cult following over the years. It tells the story of a man who’s frustrated with his mundane job and in the end, he quits to pursue his passion. The film had a solid effect and it's common to hear many resigning to follow their passion, often in creative fields. Imtiaz Ali opened up on this aspect at a fan meet hosted in Mumbai by Laksh Maheshwari.
Imtiaz Ali said, “You need to eat food and wear good clothes. But for that, you need to earn money. And if you want to holiday in Switzerland, you need to earn even more! The idea is to balance it out. There’s no other option. Your body will make it balanced. You have to survive and you should survive so that you can prosper and do what you want to do even more.”
He added, “A humble request to all those who left their jobs after watching Tamasha – be successful and be a good example. The first time it happened to me was when I was having a meal in a restaurant. Suddenly, a man from across the street, sitting in another restaurant, came running towards me. I wondered – Kaun hai yeh? Should I hide or run away? He came and told me, ‘I left my job (after watching Tamasha)’. I asked him, ‘Did you leave or were you asked to leave?’! But he was quite emotional and passionate. He was the first person to tell me that Tamasha motivated him to leave his job.”
Imtiaz continued, “I told him, ‘Work very hard. Make a success out of yourself’. Otherwise, he’ll again come running towards me and say, ‘It is because of this guy (referring to himself) that I am in pain’! So, please bring success to your endaevour. If you don’t, then you’re not inspiring other people to be able to do it.”
