en Bollywood News Honey Singh criticises Gulzar’s song ‘Beedi’, addresses objectification in his music: “Unko aap legend bolte ho?”

Honey Singh calls Gulzar's song ‘Beedi’ from Omkara "misogynistic" and defends his lyrics against accusations of objectifying women.

Popular singer-rapper Honey Singh recently sparked controversy by labelling veteran lyricist Gulzar's famous song ‘Beedi’ from the 2006 film Omkara as "misogynistic." During an interview with Times of India, Singh addressed the recurring criticism of his lyrics, often accused of objectifying women.

Honey Singh Criticises Beedi Lyrics as Misogynistic

When asked about his songs frequently being called "objectionable and misogynistic," Honey Singh expressed his frustration, comparing his work to that of renowned lyricists. Referring to Gulzar's song ‘Beedi,’ Singh said, "Gulzar sahab likh rahe hain 'Beedi jalaile jigar se piya, jigar mein badi aag hai,' jigar kahan hota hai aurat ka? This is misogynistic for me." He also took issue with another lyric, "Zuban pe laga namak ishq ka," questioning why such imagery was used.

Honey Singh DEFENDS His Lyrics

In the interview, Singh also defended his own lyrics, which have often been criticised for objectifying women. He questioned why his music faces such scrutiny while songs from earlier decades with equally provocative lyrics are considered classics. "Main Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai jaise controversial ganon ki toh baat hi nahi karta...par Honey Singh ko hi kyun gaali di jaati hai aur unko aap legend bolte ho?" he argued.

Singh pointed out that while society is becoming more modern in some ways, it also holds onto backward views about certain forms of expression. "Modernise bhi ho rahe hain par backward bhi soch rahe hain," he added.

Honey Singh’s comments have divided public opinion, with some agreeing that older songs like Beedi could be seen as problematic today, while others defend Gulzar’s artistic choices. Despite the controversy, Honey Singh continues to make waves in the music industry. His latest album, Glory, was released on August 26, featuring collaborations with artists from Latin America, Western Europe, and Indian folk singers.
