Dhurandhar was always expected to score at the box office. However, no one was ready for the fact that it would become unstoppable at the box office and become the first film ever to cross the Rs. 200 crore mark in Week 2. The trade and industry were left stunned as it collected more on its third Friday than Avatar: Fire And Ash, though the latter is a globally popular franchise whose previous parts have overperformed in India. Meanwhile, the Kartik Aaryan-Ananya Panday starrer Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri is all set to release in cinemas on Christmas Day. We spoke to trade experts who told Bollywood Hungama that this film will face a challenge. At the same time, they confirmed that if the romcom has merits, it has all the chances to succeed at the box office.
Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “I am sure that Dhurandhar as well as Avatar: Fire And Ash are going to retain screens. They are not going to let it go as it’s a big week. So, it’s a tough situation to be in for Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri. It’s not just competing with one film but two giants. By the time Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri releases, Dhurandhar and Avatar would be stepping into the fourth week and second week, respectively. Yet, it’ll be a tough fight for screens, prime time shows and the footfalls.”
Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, agreed, “By then, Dhurandhar will be a day away from Week 3. At present, we are still awaiting the audience reaction for Avatar: Fire And Ash. Assuming that both do extremely well this week, it’ll prove difficult for Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri. But if one of them slows down, then there’s space for Tu Meri.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan explained, “It’s a city-centric film. It’s not a mass movie. The jokes will appeal to the multiplex audience. Moreover, two big films have already arrived this month and both offered something new or cinematic to the audience. But Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri doesn’t promise anything new. It gives a déjà vu of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.”
He also said, “The festival period will prove to be an advantage. At the same time, a section of the audience is away on holiday during this time of the year. Hence, the film faces immense challenges.”
Suniel Wadhwa, co-founder and director at film production and distribution firm Karmic Films, opined, “Even Avatar: Fire And Ash struggled to get single screens. So, I think a similar scenario would emerge for Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri. This is because single screens across the country are doing exceptionally well for Dhurandhar.”
However, all of them feel that the Karan Johar production does stand a chance if reports are on its side. Taran Adarsh said, “If the film has merit, it has chances. Kartik enjoys a terrific following among the youth. I am sure that there’s a section of the audience that would like to watch this film as well.”
Atul Mohan exulted, “One song has worked while Kartik is liked by the audience and has a huge following among women. If the film is well-made, nothing can stop it from becoming a success.”
Girish Johar stated, “It’s a Dharma film, starring Kartik Aaryan, who’s loved by everyone. He’s one of the rising stars today. Moreover, it releases during a good holiday period. It enjoys two long weekends as it releases on Thursday, December 25, which is a Christmas holiday. It’ll enjoy another holiday on Thursday, January 1. So, if the film is liked, it’ll have the added advantage, thanks to its release period.”
As for competition from Dhurandhar, he remarked, “Dhurandhar is going into the repeat mode. It has got extensive showcasing, including post-midnight screenings. Those who have watched it once may go for it now, or those who are experiencing FOMO will venture to the cinemas out of curiosity.”
Taran Adarsh signed off by hoping, “We have had two hits, Tere Ishq Mein and Dhurandhar, back-to-back. I want the year to close with a bang with Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri! This year has been great for love stories. Saiyaara was a success and so was Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat and Tere Ishk Mein. Let’s hope saal ke aakhri week mein chauka maara jaayega!”
