Hema Malini and Shah Rukh Khan seem to have had a long-lost connection and it seems that the actress had one of the biggest roles to play in his career, as she gave him his first film. For the unversed, Hema Malini discovered SRK’s potential when the latter was doing interesting roles in television shows and offered him her directorial debut Dil Aashna Hai (1992). But did you know she rejected him in his first audition for the film? On her birthday, we decided to look back at how Hema Malini came to offer Shah Rukh his first film.

As the Sholay actress turns 75, we recall how she was instrumental in discovering the new face and how she initially was not satisfied with his audition for her film Dil Aashna Hai. An India Today report, which quoted excerpts from Hema’s biography Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl, read, “Hema remembers how nervous Shah Rukh had been during that first meeting. Apparently, every question of hers was met with a breathless, incoherent reply! The first audition left her dissatisfied. Hema suggested they try again – this time with his hair gelled back and his colourful jacket replaced with a plain tee. The results were satisfactory but just to be doubly sure, Hema called Dharmendra over to come and meet the young actor. Dharam, it is believed, took a liking to the young man instantly.”
The same book also revealed how her film provided SRK the platform which later resulted in him signing four films consecutively. “When she saw his photograph for the first time, she told me that Shah Rukh is a star and he will change the industry. Since then, I knew that something big was going to happen with my movie. The day he signed my film, the same week he had signed four other films, including Deewana, King Uncle (1993) and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994),” read the excerpt.
Interestingly, life came a full circle for these prominent Bollywood personalities, as Hema Malini also played the adopted mother of Shah Rukh Khan in the film Veer Zaara, co-starring Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, and Amitabh Bachchan.
