This exhibition brings to public view the work of Damodar Kamat, a pioneering Marathi photographer whose still images helped define the visual history of Indian cinema. Featuring rare photographs from iconic films and collaborations with legendary directors such as Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, and Bimal Roy, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the golden era of Indian filmmaking.

Honouring a Legacy Behind the Lens
Businessman and economist Shivdutt Das, who founded the art foundation in Kamat’s honour, spoke about the importance of preserving such cultural archives. “I have always believed that art and culture are integral to a nation’s identity. Shri Damodar Kamat, a proud son of Maharashtra, made exceptional contributions to Indian cinema’s visual storytelling. It is our privilege to share his extraordinary body of work with the world, so that future generations can continue to be inspired by it.”

Curator’s Vision: Bringing Still Frames to Life
Curator Parvez Damania expressed his appreciation for Kamat’s deep cinematic connection. “Curating this exhibition has been an honour. Damodar Kamat’s photographs are more than just stills—they capture the soul of Indian cinema. Through Timeless Frames, we hope to give audiences an opportunity to reconnect with an era where every frame told a story.”

Kamat’s body of work spans decades and includes over 300,000 archived negatives, now preserved and digitized by his grandchildren Neha and Abhishek Kamat through Kamat Foto Flash, a family-led initiative that continues his legacy.

A Cultural Moment for Mumbai
This initiative is more than just a retrospective. It serves as an important act of cultural preservation, offering the public access to visual narratives that shaped Indian cinema’s evolution. By moving these photographs from private archives to the public eye, the exhibition aims to highlight Mumbai’s deep connection to film history and visual arts.

Grand Inauguration with Film and Civic Icons
The opening evening will be attended by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis, along with civic dignitaries, artists, academics, and cultural leaders. Veterans and stars of Indian cinema, including Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn and Kajol, as well as Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, are also expected to attend in celebration of Shri Damodar Kamat’s enduring legacy.
