“Gulaab Gang is very relevant in today’s world” – Madhuri Dixit : Bollywood News

It is time to celebrate three decades in the industry for Madhuri Dixit. From Abodh [1984] to Gulaab Gang [2014], it has been one eventful journey indeed for Madhuri who has seen the world up, close and personal, both inside and outside the industry. Now that she is gearing up for the arrival of the Soumik Sen directed action-drama set in rural terrain of India, Madhuri truly believes that the film is as relevant as it gets.

"If Dedh Ishqiya showed a traditional world which is crumbling with the arrival of New Age, Gulaab Gang is very topical and relevant because it talks about women empowerment, self defense and education for all. It is wonderful as the film talks about mutual respect between a man and a woman, an equal equation between the two genders and how a woman can stand on her own feet independently," says Madhuri.

As Rajjo, Madhuri is happy to be playing a character which is relatable enough for today's audience.

"She is not based on any one particular real life person though. She is someone who represents all these women who are doing good work in the society," says Madhuri.

Meanwhile she is feeling elated that her own good work in Dedh Ishqiya continues to win her accolades ever since the film's release.

"That gives me a lot of happiness," smiles Madhuri, "I know that the film was a little slow to start but then the audience appreciation helped it cover a much greater distance. The critics loved it too so it was a win-win situation. I have always played a strong woman so it was nice to be playing someone who is emotionally weak. It was a tight rope to walk but I am glad that it came well on screen."

Madhuri is also glad that in a matter of weeks, she is playing two distinct characters with Anubhav Sinha and Sahara Movie Studios' Gulaab Gang presenting her in an altogether different action avtar.

Says Madhuri, "Absolutely. See, I firmly believe there is this whole myth surrounding married women not being right for the big screen, though I do feel it is unfortunate that it exists. Thankfully, audience doesn't see it this way and hence movies are succeeding on the basis of storyline. As a matter of fact, there are a lot more women in the industry today than ever before. Audience has opened up far more than ever before. Role of women has generally changed."
