Gujarati cinema made a significant impact in 2025, as evident from the box office figures and footfalls. In December last year, we had reported that the total collections of Gujarati films in 2025 jumped to Rs. 100 crores for the first time ever. Before the industry could process this achievement, the numbers zoomed past the Rs. 200 crore mark. The feat was achieved thanks to the divine blockbuster, Laalo - Krishna Sada Sahaayate. The film opened in the dull pre-Diwali period and struggled to find an audience in the first two weeks. But slowly, it began attracting moviegoers, leading to increased showcasing with each passing day. Reportedly made in just Rs. 50 lakhs, it went on to cross the Rs. 100 croress mark, an unbelievable feat.
The Ormax Box Office Report 2025 was published 10 days ago and it revealed that the cumulative gross box office figures of Gujarati films were Rs. 242 crores. In short, it showed a historic growth of nearly 188%. The footfalls also jumped from 90 lakhs in 2024 to 1.80 crores in 2025. This was also the first time that the footfall crossed the 1 crore mark.
It is essential to note that, although Laalo - Krishna Sada Sahaayate gave a significant boost, the numbers were already impressive for the industry in 2025. This is evident by the fact that just 5 days before Laalo’s release, the cumulative figure had reached the Rs. 105 crores mark. Chaniya Toli came second and it gave a tough fight to the Diwali releases, Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, and earned around Rs. 24 crores gross. The film was loved for its subject and fresh treatment and it could have done more in the absence of the Laalo - Krishna Sada Sahaayate wave.
Umbarro was the first big grosser of 2025 as it earned Rs. 17 crores. Vash Level 2 underperformed a bit but had an advantage as it had a Hindi version, named Vash Vivash Level 2, that collected as much as the original Gujarati version. The collections turned out to be around Rs. 14.80 crores.
Bachu Ni Benpani, starring superstar Siddharth Randeria along with Ratna Pathak Shah, had a long run in cinemas. The comic caper collected Rs. 14.25 crores. Lastly, the legal comedy All The Best Pandya, too, left a mark. It was in the news after the shows of Salman Khan-starrer Sikandar were replaced with the film after the former bombed.

Tough year for the Marathi film industry
While Gujarati had the best year ever, Marathi cinema, on the contrary, probably had its worst performance in years. The box office collections of all Marathi films of 2025 put together didn’t even cross Rs. 100 crores mark. The last time this happened was more than 10 years ago (the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 were exceptions). The gross box office collections stood at Rs. 96 crores. The figure declined by 46% compared to 2024, when the industry earned Rs. 177 crores. Even this figure was less than the 2023 (Rs. 201 crores) and 2024 (Rs. 268 crores) earnings.
The footfalls were just 70 lakhs while the 2024 number was more by a crore, at 1.70 lakhs. Speaking of the highest grossers, the Dilip Prabhavakar-starrer Dashavatar was at the top, grossing Rs. 29 crores. However, the other top grossers – Jarann, Gulkand and Ata Thambaycha Naay – collected just Rs. 8 crores.
Thus, Dashavatar was the only Marathi film to cross the Rs. 10 crores mark. The Ormax data remarks that ‘The absence of blockbuster titles or franchises has led to the decline in Marathi cinema’s box office collections, from Rs. 200 crores to less than Rs. 100 crores in the last two years’. Interestingly, some promising films, starring big names, did release like Fussclass Dabhade, SuSheela SuJeet, Devmanus, Zapuk Zupuk, Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 3, Premachi Goshta 2, Punha Shivajiraje Bhosale, etc., but they failed to work at the box office.
However, there’s hope that 2026 will be better. Krantijyoti Vidyalay Marathi Madhyam, which was released on January 1, is a success and might cross Dashavatar’s gross collections. Aga Aga Sunbai! Kay Mhantay Sasubai is also steady at the box office and hopefully would cross the Rs. 10 crores mark.
Speaking of upcoming films, Punha Ekda Sade Made 3, which was postponed due to Ajit Pawar’s death, will now arrive on February 13 and promises to perform due to the casting and popularity of the first part, Saade Maade Teen (2007). Ranapati Shivray Swari Agra, Tighee, Maya, etc. should also score if word of mouth is on their side.
