The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar had a very fascinating conversation with Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day about his various projects. He shared an interesting incident about Aamir Khan, who acted in his directorial debut, Dil Chahta Hai (2001).

Farhan Akhtar said, “He heard the script and agreed to do the film. But he told Ritesh Sidhwani and me, ‘I have heard this script called Lagaan (2001), which I want to do first. So, if you both don’t mind, I’ll complete that film first and then I’ll shoot for Dil Chahta Hai’. Ritesh and I obviously were in no position to disagree with him and obviously, we wanted him in the film. Hence, we agreed to wait for him.”

Farhan added, “Aamir went out to shoot for Lagaan. I had 9-10 months to kill as my prep was done, more or less. So, I was sitting and tinkering with the script as I was thinking, ‘Yeh better ho sakta hai’ or ‘Woh better ho sakta hai’.”

Farhan continued, “After he finished shooting Lagaan, he called and told me, ‘I am returning from Bhuj. I am coming to your house. I want to hear the script again with a fresh mind as I have not heard it for months’. I narrated him the new draft. He was listening and mid-way, he asked me, ‘What script is this?’. I replied, ‘This is the script of the film’. He replied, ‘No. This is not that script. When you came to my house, you had brought one green file. Where is that green file? (laughs)’!”

Farhan Akhtar then stated, “I replied, ‘The green file is in my drawer’. He replied, ‘Get that green file and narrate that script to me’. I narrated it and he said, ‘This is the script’.”

Farhan concluded, “The problem is that when writers and directors have a lot of time in their hands, they start feeling that they can improve. Aamir said, ‘You have written something. It's good. Leave it. Don’t let your mind get ahead of you and assume that it could be better, especially when people have had an emotional reaction to your script’.”
