Many celebrities in the recent past have addressed the increasing influence of entourage culture where a extensive of about eight to ten people assist the celebrities for their activities. While some have condemned the dependency that stars have on this team, a few others have discussed the financial pressure on producers, who have bear the costs of the actors and their teams. In a recent interaction, addressing this subject was choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah Khan.
Not known to mince words, while appreciating the positive changes in the industry, Farah Khan also explained how the industry fails to function based on personal connections but has taken up a more corporate or clinical approach in terms of sharing a bond with the colleague. “The good change is that the industry is far more organised today, people come on time, there is a studio system in place, so all the contracts are proper, kisi ke paise koi khaa nahi sakta hai (nobody can eat up someone else’s share). The bad change is that, earlier, the industry would function on relationships. So, if I wanted something, I would directly call the actor. Now, I will have to meet the manager’s sub manager, then the manager will meet, after that the agency will meet! It has all become very clinical. The inter-personal relations have been ruined because of this,” she told to Twin Encounter.
In the same report, the filmmaker also addressed the issue of extensive entourage where stars are often accompanied by a team of eight to ten people at any given point of time. Speaking of the kind of financial pressure, producers have to face, owing to the same, Farah added, “The change I would like to bring about is that the entourage cost has become too much. An actress comes with nine people, an actor comes with eight people. That is a waste of resources. That cost is nowhere to be seen in the film! That needs to be controlled a bit. Woh producers pe bohot bhaari padta hai (it really does impact badly on the producers).”
Apart from Farah, in the past, actress Ratna Pathak Shah had also questioned entourage culture and posed a question wondering if this team has any impact on an actor’s performance.
