The Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan is just days away from release, and the makers of the film are leaving no stone unturned to promote this rather unconventional SRK film. However, away from all the glitz and glamour, the film’s director Maneesh Sharma recently recounted his first encounter with the star that is Shah Rukh Khan. Talking about the same, Maneesh added that it was way back in July 2004 when he was in the city for a week when he met four A-list actors apart from Shah Rukh. But, it was not an easy task for Sharma to get an audience with Khan; in fact the director was limited to contacting SRK’s manager via phone calls, messages and email while he awaited an audience. While Sharma waited he used to crash at friends’ houses, all the while texting the actor.
After about three days from the time he was in the city Maneesh received a text from SRK that simply read, ‘Is 6.30 okay to meet up? I am busy in a shoot. I should be back by then. Here’s my address, Mannat, Bandstand.’ Following this response Sharma arrived at actor’s well known address to find it thronged with people, more likely fans awaiting the actor’s return. Almost out of patience, since Khan was not there Sharma made to leave with his meeting unfulfilled when Khan texted him to hang around since he would be there in a few minutes. The experience of waiting among the crowd of people gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor as his car rolled into Mannat was an experience Sharma will not soon forget.
But, it was what came after that which left the director in awe of the actor. When SRK finally did arrive and Maneesh ushered in, the director was wondering what is going to happen and how he would react when Khan walked in. Being the thorough professional that he is, SRK met Manessh and began a conversation that would reveal they shared more in common. From here on, the meeting was a good, pleasant conversation.
Post the meeting while leaving the famed spot in Bandra, Maneesh was struck by the spectacle of people still waiting outside in the hopes that SRK would make an appearance and wave to them. It was this undying following charged with the emotion and excitement that eventually helped germinate the idea of Fan.
