Exploring the Box Office journey of Shahid Kapoor – Part 3

en Bollywood News Exploring the Box Office journey of Shahid Kapoor – Part 3

In Part 1 and Part 2, we explored the roller coaster ride that Shahid Kapoor has enjoyed in his Bollywood journey so far. No one challenged his talent and while some of his choices did pay dividends, a few resulted in slowing down of pace towards the winning post. In the third and concluding part, we look at how last few years didn't quite go as per the plan for Shahid but the future looks positive with an interesting set of films ahead.

A few wrong moves

There were a few unnecessary casualties soon after Kaminey that allowed the likes of Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan and even Emraan Hashmi race ahead in the race even as Shahid continued to make his case with one film after another, though with limited success.

Dil Bole Hadippa! was a professional harakiri as it belonged entirely to Rani Mukerji and hardly required the kind of histrionics that one now expected from Shahid after his good run. This Yash Raj film barely managed to recover its costs and was further harmed due to head-on collision with Salman Khan's 'I am back' story - Wanted. Chance Pe Dance saw the actor coming back with Ken Ghosh in their weakest attempt till date and deservingly bombed at the box office. The fact that Shahid had to shoot almost half the film again due to change in actress (from Jiah Khan to Genelia D'Souza) wasn't anything to cheer about either.

Paathshaala was a film that Shahid had done for his friend (Ahmed Khan) and while his role was a little less than that of a lead but more than that of a supporting actor, the movie as a whole did just okay and managed to recover it's costs.

However, it wasn't anymore about a film of his 'recovering it's costs', especially since Shahid was aiming at competing with the big ones. It was time to do something huge, something big, something that managed to bring the kind of success and audience reception that one expected from him after Jab We Met, Kaminey and Vivah. Badmaash Company could well have been that film and though it didn't quite hit the roof with it's collections, it at least did much better than his last few films and managed reasonably good collections that ensured a semi-hit status for itself.

As for that something big, huge and successful, Shahid had other things in mind. He decided to a film with his dad and named it Mausam.

The big gamble

With Mausam, Shahid Kapoor ended up playing the biggest gamble for an actor of his generation. Yes, there have been actors in the recent past who have put everything at stake while concentrating on only one film. Aamir Khan does that all the time, Shah Rukh has done that recently with Ra. One while Hrithik Roshan too has done the same for Jodhaa Akbar not too long back. However, one always wondered whether it was right on Shahid's part to be actually staying away from any film before completing Mausam. After all he hadn't quite stepped into the Top-5 zone which means this was indeed a gamble all the way and nothing but a big risk.

Yes, the film stayed on in news right through its making but surprisingly didn't quite end up creating the kind of buzz and hype that Shahid would have expected. Unfortunately for him, the move backfired and the film ended up being rejected by audience, critics as well as trade. While the experience is sure to have left a bad taste in Shahid's mouth, what worked in his favour was universal acclaim that he got for his performance.

Just like it has been right through his career where even his flops have never resulted in bad word of mouth for his acting skills, Shahid came back with some smiles at the least post Mausam debacle.

Future has to be calculated though

What has worked in Shahid's favour though that the young actor hasn't panicked till date. Despite Mausam taking a long time to be made (and then subsequently disappearing without making much mark), Shahid didn't end up signing a flurry of films. While the one which has released now is the romantic flick with Priyanka Chopra - Teri Meri Kahani, he has also been finalised for a film each with Siddharth Anand and Yash Raj Films/Maneesh Sharma (of Band Baaja Baaraat fame). Meanwhile there are also confirmed talks around him doing a film with Aanand L Rai (of Tanu Weds Manu fame) and Prabhudheva.

While he is obviously expected to play on his strengths here, it is also a given that Shahid can well expect a much better box office outing from this point on. While the phase of gambling could well be a thing of the past, his choice to work in set-ups that confirm a strong audience acceptance as well as box office moolah would ensure that superstar calling won't be too far away.
