en Bollywood News EXCLUSIVE: Yami Gautam reacts to being labelled ‘nationalistic’; says, “Nationalistic hona kabse crime ho gaya?”

Yami clarified that her intent is to tell meaningful stories that stand on their own merit while celebrating unsung heroes, citing films like Uri, Article 370, and Haq.

Yami Gautam, known for her strong performances in Uri: The Surgical Strike, Article 370, and most recently Haq, has responded to questions surrounding her choice of “nationalistic” films. In a recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, the actress addressed the perception that her film choices are overly patriotic and shared her views on being proud of her Indian identity.

Speaking candidly about the label, Yami said, “You know, someone asked me the other day at a press conference, something about being nationalistic. ‘People are calling you nationalistic, aap nationalistic filmen karti hai.’ Aur main soch rahi hoon nationalistic hona kabse bura ho gaya? Yeh kabse crime ho gaya? Mujhe laga yeh toh bohat acchi baat hai. I'm an Indian, I'm proud to be an Indian, mujhe garv hai, and if through my craft, my first service is to my audience, to my film.”

She further explained that while she is drawn to stories rooted in India’s spirit, her focus remains on delivering strong narratives. “I have to see whether I can’t ask you to watch my film just because the subject is great — it has to be a good film that stands on its own. So, if in that, I get an opportunity to tell compelling stories, to tell stories that celebrate unsung heroes. Whether it is URI, Article 370 or Haq. For me my lens is something else. I’ll always do that.”

Addressing the criticism, Yami added, “I’ve never understood the connotation of adding any negativity to it. I don’t think my filmography says that. I feel very weird that we have to justify this. I can only say I’m proud, and I think I’m just lucky that I’m getting to tell such stories.”

Yami will next be seen in Haq alongside Emraan Hashmi, which continues her streak of socially and politically charged dramas. The movie is set to release tomorrow November 7.
