When it comes to experimental style, Uorfi Javed has consistently rewritten the rulebook. But her recent 100 kg dark chocolate cake dress may well be her most ambitious creation yet — a look that quite literally blurred the line between couture and confectionery. In an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Uorfi opened up about the inspiration, craftsmanship and technical precision that went into building what she describes as a wearable, edible art installation.
The idea, she revealed, had been brewing for a while. “Honestly, it was always my dream to create an outfit made entirely out of cake. I had once seen a girl wearing something like this on the internet, and that visual just stayed with me. I kept thinking why can’t I try this? And then I realised, this has never really been done in India in this way. For me, fashion is about pushing boundaries and turning imagination into reality. I didn’t just want to wear a cake, I wanted to become the cake like a walking, edible art installation. It’s unique, dramatic, a little crazy and that’s exactly the kind of fashion I love. If it hasn’t been done before, that excites me even more,” the influence and reality show star said.
Transforming that vision into reality, however, required far more than frosting and flair. The construction process was as technical as it was creative. She shared, “The entire concept took a few days to plan because we had to figure out how to make something edible actually wearable. The structure itself took a few days to build that was the most technical part. The layering of the cake was done within 24 hours to keep it fresh. The sides and the back were made using a strong foam base so the outfit had support and didn’t collapse, and the middle portion almost 5 kilos was actual cake. We designed it in a way that the real cake remained fresh and there was minimal wastage. It was honestly like creating a sculpture. Every layer had to look aesthetic but also sit perfectly on my body. It wasn’t just fashion styling it was engineering plus baking plus couture.”
Maintaining the delicate balance between structure and softness proved to be the biggest hurdle. Elaborating on it, she continued, “That was the biggest challenge. Cake is soft, delicate, and obviously not meant to be worn. So we had to maintain a perfect balance. The foam structure underneath gave it stability, and the edible cake portion was carefully layered so it wouldn’t lose its shape. We kept the outfit in AC the entire time. While travelling to the location, it was transported in an AC van to maintain temperature. Even at the shoot location, we made sure it stayed in an air-conditioned space and even kept coolers below to maintain freshness. It was handled almost like a luxury dessert that needed constant care. For me, this wasn’t just about wearing something shocking. It was about proving that fashion can literally be anything. If you can imagine it, you can create it. And yes, you can even wear your dessert.”
With this daring experiment, Uorfi hasn’t just made a style statement — she has once again turned fashion into spectacle, sculpture and conversation all at once.
