For people of today’s generation, veteran actor Raghubir Yadav is known as Pradhan ji from the long-running web show Panchayat. Recently, he played a character completely opposite of that in Hunkkaar – The Roar. But the actor’s biggest and first claim to fame was the 1989 Doordarshan TV show Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne, directed by Prakash Jha.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, when this writer told him that his first memory of him is Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne as a kid, Yadav jokingly said, “Aap bade ho gaye lekin main abhi bhi chhota hi hoon (laughs).”
On a more serious note, he said, “Back then, I had just passed from NSD (National School of Drama). I then went to the Repertory Company. After leaving from there, I did Massey Sahib (1986), which was my first film. Then I got this serial (Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne). I realized that there was a lot to do for an actor while playing this character. So, I accepted it.”
Recalling the work culture of the old Doordarshan days, Yadav said, “Everyone was working sincerely on the show. I enjoy working sincerely and this is also my weakness. In those days, there was a lot of hard work put in in every department. There were only 26 episodes of Mungerilal but people still remember the show. The reason for this is that everyone used to work unitedly as a team. Director, writer and others used to work together. There wasn’t an atmosphere of business back then.”
Yadav pointed out that the situation “worsened” later on when daily soaps came into the picture. “Later, a lot of channels came in,” he said. “People started factories of TV shows. The whole situation started worsening. They started factories and started selling products. There was no proper culture. I have seen all of that.”
Yadav has played various characters in his decades long career. About his selection criteria over the years, he said, “It should be something I have never done before. It should challenge me. I don’t enjoy if I am able to do it easily. It should give me sleepless nights (laughs). Doobne mein maza aata hai mujhe.”
When asked how he looks back at his enormous journey of over four decades, the veteran said, “I just kept on learning. I didn’t think about reaching any goal because once you achieve it, it’s the end for you. I just felt like learning and having fun with it.”
