EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh blames “weak writing and Dhurandhar tsunami” for Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’s failure; says, “It reminded me of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh has offered a candid assessment of why Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, failed to make an impact at the box office despite backing from Dharma Productions. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Adarsh pointed to weak writing and an ill-timed release as the film’s biggest undoing.

According to Adarsh, the foundation of any film lies in its script, and without strong writing, no amount of star power can sustain it. “Any film has a foundation—its writing. If your foundation is weak, then the building can’t stand tall,” he said, adding that this was the core reason the film couldn’t run in theatres. “This is the reason Tu Meri Main Tera couldn’t work. Its writing was weak.”

While critiquing the screenplay, Adarsh was quick to acknowledge the efforts of the lead actors. He noted that Kartik Aaryan delivered a solid performance and that Ananya Panday also did her part well. However, he maintained that performances alone cannot compensate for narrative shortcomings. “Kartik did a good job. I like Kartik in the film. Ananya did a good job too. But when the writing doesn’t hold, then nothing else matters,” he explained.

Adarsh also shared a personal viewer’s perspective, admitting that while watching the film, he was reminded of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. “Of course, the writer may not have consciously taken inspiration from DDLJ, but as a viewer, that feeling came to me,” he said, adding that the familiarity worked against the film rather than in its favour.

Beyond content issues, Adarsh stressed that the timing of the release played a decisive role in the film’s failure. He described the theatrical environment at the time as unforgiving, dominated by the runaway success of Dhurandhar. Emphasising the importance of release strategy, he said, “The release period is very important—extremely important.”

Using a vivid analogy, Adarsh explained that if a tsunami has arrived and you can see it in front of you, yet you still decide to step outside, you won’t be able to stand your ground. He went on to describe Dhurandhar as that tsunami. “This tsunami is Dhurandhar. Even today, it shows no signs of stopping or slowing down. You released your film against it. Why?”

While festive season optimism may have driven the decision, Adarsh felt it backfired. “Yes, it was a festive period, and people were coming to theatres, but the speed at which Dhurandhar was running meant you couldn’t survive. And that’s exactly what happened,” he said. According to him, the combination of a weak film and direct competition with a massive hit proved fatal.

The industry, it appears, took note of Dhurandhar’s dominance. For instance, Ikkis—Dharmendra’s final film and the big-screen debut of Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia, directed by Sriram Raghavan and backed by Maddock Films—was originally scheduled to release on December 25, 2026, the same day as Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri. However, the makers chose to push the release to January 1 after witnessing Dhurandhar’s sustained and powerful run since its December 5 release.
