en Bollywood News EXCLUSIVE: Sudha Chandran talks about her love for antagonist roles; says, “People love to see me torturing people”

Sudha Chandran returns as antagonist Kailashi Devi in the upcoming Colors’ drama Doree.

Challenging the stereotypes and prejudices associated with a woman, Doree aims at bringing a change in the society and in their perspective towards the female gender. With a six-year-old playing the lead, Sudha Chandran will be essaying the role of a matriarch named Kailashi Devi and the show will see the little girl challenging the beliefs and thoughts of Kailashi who continues to promote the success of a boy child over a female. In an exclusive and hearty conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Sudha Chandran discussed about her character and her love for playing the ‘villain’ aka ‘vamp’ in television shows.

Speaking about playing the antagonist, Sudha Chandran said, “The role has many dimensions. I wanted to ensure that it should be different from the characters that I have played. Because these days, they just say you're playing a negative role, but they don't understand that negative also has lots of shades.” Further, Sudha revealed that her character Kailashi Devi is all about principles and stands by what she believes in.

Going by her words, it seems that her powerful character may have undergone an intense journey to be the person that she is. “She is not unapologetically negative. There may be reasons why she is doing so. It's her perception towards life. See if I stand and think as Kailashi Sridevi, I feel she is right. She stands for her family and has certain responsibilities towards her family. Maybe she's got a dark past. Maybe she has certain experiences in her life which has made her like this.”

Comparing it with her own journey, Sudha added, “If I would say, after the accident, I had become a little rude and become a little arrogant. And people said that this is not right. But that was a defense mechanism that I had to adopt for myself to become successful.” Readers would be aware that this is not her first brush with antagonistic characters. From Ramola Sikand to the recent Patali Devi, Sudha has kept television audiences entertained with her grey shaded characters for years now. “It's very interesting to play something what you are not. Because if you continue playing what you are, then it tends to get a little too monotonous,” maintained the actress.

She also went on to add that even when she plays positive roles, she has had fans expressing their desire to see her as the ‘villain’ in shows. “When I try to do positive roles, they say Sudhaji kuch aisa karo ki ghar jalao, logon ko torture karo (burn the house, torture people). May be because this is Kalyug, I had people telling me how they love me torturing people in serials. If you see Naagin, I tortured the animals. I am now supposed to torture this small little kid, who is a six-year-old. But yes, people love it. I believe that for any protagonist to come out very strong, it's very important for the antagonist to be very strong,” she concluded.

Doree will air from November 1 onwards, from Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Colors.
