While this filmmaker has given us masterpieces like Hero, Khalnayak, Pardes, among others spoke about the changing phase of Bollywood films and recalled the times when filmmaking was a different business altogether. In the recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, while discussing many aspects of cinema, the filmmaker spoke about how films were based on a trust between the director and actor’s close relationship but in today’s times, it has changed as agencies decide their relationship.
EXCLUSIVE: Subhash Ghai reveals how agencies design relationships of actors; says, “When I meet my industry friends, we meet like school and college friends”Speaking candidly about his relationship with some of the biggest stars in the industry, Subhash Ghai said, “Humne zindagi bhar relationship pe hi kaam kiya hai. Jab tak screen pe humari chemistry nahi milti tab tak woh dikhega nahi. Woh trust hona zaruri hai. Maine jab Kalicharan banayi thi, tab Shatrughan Sinha mere best friend the, woh aaj bhi hai, 45 saal ke baad bhi. Aaj bhi main Anil ho, Jackie ho, Sanjay Dutt ho, Madhuri Dixit ho, Mahima ho, all the actors are as good friends of mine as they were. Aaj bhi hum milte hain hai (our work was always based on relationships. Till we don’t have that kind of chemistry and trust with each other, audiences cannot see it onscreen. That trust is necessary. For example, I made Kalicharan with Shatrughan Sinha. He was my best friend then and even after 45 yrs now, he is my best friend. Whether it is anyone else like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Mahima Chaudhary, all of them are as good friends of mine as they were years ago. We still meet and talk to each other).”
He continued, “Parso main Anil (Kapoor) ke ghar pe tha toh hum khul ke dil ki baat kartein hai. We always go to each other’s house, we drink, we share our experiences. Chahe woh Shah Rukh Khan ho ya koi bhi ho, humare rishtey mein koi farak nahi aaya hai. Jab bhi milte hain, hum college-school ke purane doston ki tarah milte hain. Aaj kal toh aapke relationships ko decide karte hain unke agencies… (Day before yesterday, I had met Anil Kapoor at his residence and we both had a hearty chat. We always do that, go to each other’s house, drink, share our experiences. Whether it is him or Shah Rukh Khan or anyone, our relationships have remained the same over the years. Whenever we meet, it’s like meeting your old college-school friends. But in today’s times, your relationships are decided by the agencies).”
