EXCLUSIVE: Sooraj Barjatya reveals that he doesn’t want to please teenagers; says, “I don’t want to compete or run the race”

In this exclusive conversation with Bollywood, Hungama, Sooraj Barjatya explained why he doesn’t make films for teenagers and run the rat race.

Sooraj Barjatya is known for making Indian family dramas. The director is returning to filmmaking with a one-of-a-kind film Uunchai that talks about a bond of four friends and how three of them take up the mission of climbing Mount Everest despite being senior citizens, only to fulfill the final wish of their late friend. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Sooraj spoke about why he doesn’t want to please this generation and the teenagers and how he would like to make films that he wants to.

Speaking about how he doesn’t want to be a part of a rat race anymore, Sooraj Barjatya told Bollywood Hungama, “Main dekhta sab hoon. I try and keep in touch with what the youngsters are doing. But I don’t want to please them because I feel if I try to please them, I will fall. I should really now go into my soul. At this stage, I don’t want to compete or run the race. I really want to go deep and make what I want to make. With age, there comes a certain maturity and young people should make for young people.”

He also spoke about how the world of entertainment has opened new avenues and new genres that give filmmakers ample of liberty to work in varied kind of projects. He went on to add, “Aaj kal we are so lucky ki har kism ki film chalti hai. Matlab hum kabhi soch nahi sakte the ki 15 saal pehle ki bina kisi love story ki koi film chal payegi. The world has opened. Aaj aap kisi bhi viewer se poochte hai, toh woh pehle puchte hai ki kahani kya hai?Woh yeh nahi puchte hain ki love story hai ya nahi. Aage koi yeh bhi nahi puchne wala hai ki starring kaun hai… Kyunki aaj kal sab kahani sunkar hi picture dekhne jaate hain. (These days we are so lucky that all kinds of films work. 15 years ago, who would have that a film without love story will work so well? The world has opened. Today, the first question that viewers ask is about the film’s story. Nobody asks if the film has a love story or no. In some time, I don’t think viewers will also ask who is starring in the film. These days, everyone watches a movie only after knowing what the film is about.)

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta, Boman Irani, Sarika, Anupam Kher in the lead along with Parineeti Chopra, Uunchai is slated to release on November 11.
