Filmmaker Ankit Sakhiya’s Gujarati movie Laalo – Krishna Sada Sahaayate became a surprise blockbuster after it released last year during Diwali. The film opened low but then picked up and ultimately earned a mammoth Rs. 100 crores. Shruhad Goswami plays the pivotal role of Lord Krishna in the movie. He spoke about the film and its success in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama. Laalo released in Hindi today January 9.
Goswami agreed that playing the character of God is like walking a tight rope in India. “It is a very big responsibility to play the character of God,” he said. “I had to ensure that I don’t do anything that can hurt people’s sentiments. There was a little bit of fear as well. But as we kept working on it, it kept becoming simple.”
The actor doesn’t like taking credit for the final result of his character in the film. “When I saw the film for the first time, I wondered how I did this,” he said. “I am unable to believe that this was done by me. I feel there was some divine power through which I was able to do this. Else, how can a human being play God? So, I don’t want to take any credit for this. It happened with God’s grace.”
When it comes to playing Lord Krishna on screen, the first name that comes to our mind is Nitish Bharadwaj, who played the character in BR Chopra’s classic TV series Mahabharat.
When asked whether it was a conscious decision to ensure that his act doesn’t remind viewers of Bharadwaj, Goswami said, “As actors, we always think that we don’t want to play a character like how others played it. We should do it ourselves. Nitish Bharadwaj is a different person; Shruhad is a different person. His director and my director are different. Ankit had told me that we needed to show God in a particular way, who even has tears, speaks to us, admonishes us. We had taken this conscious call from the start to show that our God is like this.”
Goswami shared that he always believed in Lord Krishna but after Laalo, his faith has increased. “And why won’t it? We say – ‘Maange vees, aape trees, Jai Dwarkadhish’. But we hadn’t even asked for anything. He still gave us so much. He has told us to hold His finger, so He can take us (to our destination). So, you will obviously believe,” he said.
After such an enormous success, Goswami admitted that he and his team are receiving calls for future projects. “We are getting a lot of calls for script narrations,” he said. “But we haven’t been able to find time as we are still busy with Laalo’s promotions. We will meet them after we get free. Right now, we don’t know which film we will do next. We will decide once we listen to the scripts.”
