In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Shefali Shah opened up about the creative and personal impact of being part of a successful franchise like Delhi Crime. When asked about the biggest advantage of working in such a long-standing and popular series, the actress reflected on how profoundly it shaped her career and identity as an artist.
Shefali recalled that the show first coming her way became a defining moment. “Well, DC (Delhi Crime) by itself happening to me was the turning point of my career. I would've never imagined if some years ago somebody has said that to me who's not conventionally good looking, who's not in her 20's young to say so, is going to headline a show. I would have been like, no chance, not happening, and that possibility probably would be there if it would have been for heroines. Definitely not actors who've been sidelined. So that itself was a huge thing.”
The overwhelming response to the first season led to the making of Delhi Crime 2, which further strengthened her character’s presence. “Then when we did DC2 which was announced because DC1 received so much love and it garnered so much respect. The second one went through and Vartika only became bigger.”
She also described the excitement surrounding the franchise, especially when new footage was unveiled. “And then I remember when they announced the teaser of DC, the slate launch when they did, it was like when is it coming? When is it coming?”
For Shefali, returning to the character of Vartika Chaturvedi always felt familiar yet creatively demanding. She explained, “And it's just great to go back into the world which feels like home, and at the same time it is challenging because, ‘Yes, I know her, I know her core, she can't be predictable. That can get very boring, not predictable over season and not even predictable in a season. Over six episodes you can't guess what she's going to do or how she's going to behave, and of course making sure that her core doesn't faze her at all.’”
She emphasised how rewarding it was to step into a story that resonated so deeply with audiences. “But it's just incredible coming back to something that people love so much and I believe in and I'm so proud of.”
Through her reflections, Shefali Shah highlighted that the true advantage of a franchise like Delhi Crime lies not only in its scale or success but in the opportunity. It offers to revisit a powerful character, challenge oneself creatively, and grow with a role that audiences cherish. For her, Vartika Chaturvedi is more than a performance—she is a journey that continues to inspire both the actress and her fans.
