Director Mudassar Aziz recently reflected on the memorable experience of getting superstar Shah Rukh Khan on board for a cameo in his debut film Dulha Mil Gaya. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Mudassar shared the story behind how he convinced Khan to be a part of the project, even as a first-time director.
EXCLUSIVE: “Shah Rukh Khan yaaro ke yaar hain,” says Mudassar Aziz; recalls approaching him for cameo in his directorial debut film Dulha Mil GayaMudassar Aziz’s Early Enthusiasm as a Director
Mudassar Aziz, who recently helmed Khel Khel Mein, opened up about his journey as a director, which began with Dulha Mil Gaya in 2010. At just 26 years old, Mudassar was filled with optimism and innocence as he embarked on his first directorial venture. “At the age of 26, I signed a film as a director. I felt like, ‘oh, this is what I wanted to achieve,’ but the truth is far from that. The film industry teaches you a lot,” he said.
Mudassar narrated the script to Fardeen Khan and Sushmita Sen, both of whom agreed to be a part of the film. While casting Sushmita’s character, Mudassar envisioned her love interest as someone who could enter like a "storm" and solve everyone's problems, adding a larger-than-life feel to the narrative. This is when the idea of casting Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo was born.
How Shah Rukh Khan Came Onboard
Excited about his vision, Mudassar approached producer Vivek Vaswani, who happened to be a close friend of Shah Rukh Khan. With unwavering enthusiasm, Mudassar suggested that Vivek arrange a meeting with Khan to discuss the cameo role. To his delight, the producer agreed and took him to meet the superstar.
Recounting the interaction, Mudassar praised Shah Rukh Khan’s generosity and friendship. “Woh Yaaro Ke Yaar aadami hai, Khan sahab. He looked at it that way — my friend has come to offer me a cameo, so I am doing it with no questions asked,” Mudassar fondly recalled.
Despite the pressures of being a newcomer, Mudassar found immense support in Shah Rukh, who agreed to the cameo purely on the strength of their relationship. Speaking about the megastar, Mudassar concluded, “From a male gaze, he’s a feeling, he’s not a human being.”
In the same interview, Mudassar also touched upon the challenges he faced with his recent film Khel Khel Mein. The film, starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Ammy Virk, Aditya Seal, Vaani Kapoor, and Taapsee Pannu, had a tough time at the box office due to its release clashing with Stree 2 and Vedaa.
