Often, when a star delivers a dud, its fan base usually is in denial or attacks those who slam their favourite actor. But since last Sunday, we are seeing a rare occurrence. The fans of Salman Khan are up in arms after watching his latest release, Sikandar. The film failed to meet the expectations of most of the viewers. Instead of overlooking the flaws of the film and his track record, they are voicing their disappointment openly. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to one ardent fan, the 29-year-old Mohit Kala. Currently based in Spain, he runs a popular handle called ‘SALMAN KI SENA’ on X (formerly Twitter). Mohit poured his heart out while talking about his Sikandar experience, what fans want from Salman Khan and a lot more.

EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan’s DIE-HARD fan opens up after Sikandar’s debacle: “The audience in my show was laughing. Woh dekh kar dil ko chubb raha tha; we fail to understand why Salman can’t realize (that he’s going wrong). He must take a break”

Mohit began by saying that he was one of the first ones in the world to watch Sikandar on the big screen, “I enquired with Spanish distributors and they confirmed that Sikandar would release a day before here (Saturday, March 29), at 9:00 pm (1:00 am IST). This meant that I would be able to see before anyone else in India and that added to my excitement. The trailer had worked for me. During the announcement of the film, I was not that excited. But then I watched all the films of A R Murugadoss, right from his debut venture. That made me believe that even if he had made a bad film, it’d still be worth watching.”

He added, “Hence, I entered the cinema hall with high expectations. The show was packed; it was very rare to see a sold-out show for a Hindi film in my town. It might be common in Madrid and Barcelona but here, in Málaga, it happens rarely. There are very few Indians here. Many of them were there but majorly, the show was full of local Spanish people. I was shocked, wondering, ‘Yeh kahan se aa gaye’!”

Mohit Kala further said, “Salman’s entry was very nice. It was not his best but it was a decent introduction scene, different from his entry scenes in other recent films. After the song ‘Zohra Jabeen’, I started getting disconnected from the film. I still hoped that the second half would be watchable. But the post-interval portion was flat. There was no screenplay at all. I was at a loss for words.”

He elaborated, “When Salman cries on screen, you also get moved. But in Sikandar, that didn’t happen. Meanwhile, the audience in my show was laughing. Woh dekh kar dil ko chubb raha tha. After all, here’s an actor who’s capable of films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai etc.”

Mohit Kala confessed that he was unable to fathom how to inform other Salman Khan fans about the contents of the film, “They knew I was watching the film. I didn’t have the heart to say anything negative. If I had said good things, people would have known the truth the next day, when the film was out. Still, I wrote a positive review. But I deleted it in six hours as I realized that I was cheating my followers by doing so. With his previous films, we had a complaint that he used to work with not-so-exciting names. In the case of Sikandar, that was not the case. Didn’t Salman realize what he was signing?”

What also pained fans was that while many actors are now making an entry into the Rs. 500 crore club, Salman Khan hasn’t been able to do so. This aspect hurts all the more since he gave a Rs. 300 crore grosser almost 10 years back and was one of the first ones to do so.

On this, Mohit Kala exulted, “I am not into box office as such. I want to see Salman rise again not for the box office validation but for the legacy that he has built over the years. I am not that old but my favourite Salman Khan film is not Bajrangi Bhaijaan or Sultan but Veergati! I became a Salman fan when I saw that movie.”

He went down memory lane, “My first film in cinemas was Tere Naam. I saw the film at Mehul Cinema, Mulund, Mumbai. I can never forget that day. The show was packed. It was more than 100% full – some people were sitting on white- and red-coloured plastic chairs. I instantly knew that this was a star who could pull audiences to cinemas in hordes. He was going through a controversial phase. Yet, I saw people arriving on Pulsar and also donning his hairstyle. He was truly a trendsetter.”

He added, “I am worried about his legacy. His audience is in single screens. But he cultivated an audience in multiplexes thanks to Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Sultan. It helped him in some way for Race 3 as well but with that film, he lost out on that multiplex audience. Now, his base is Tier 2, 3 and 4 cities. It was thanks to them that Sikandar didn’t fall on Bassi Eid as many were expecting. But it’s not adding significantly to the overall collections.”

So, what should Salman Khan do to bounce back? Mohit Kala said, “We don’t want him to do a mediocre film. If he’s not getting an exciting script, he should take a break. I understand that he likes to help people and he fears that if he doesn’t do a film, many might not lose out on a job opportunity. All I’d like to advise him is – ‘Ek baar selfish hoke apne liye jiyo na’!’’

He added, “We fail to understand why Salman can’t realize (that he’s going wrong). He must take a break, like Shah Rukh Khan. SRK realized that his films were not doing well and he worked out a solution. Salman should also stop working on Bigg Boss. This show now invites random YouTubers; their names get attached to Salman and as a result, the latter gets hate. Again, it dents his stardom.”

Mohit Kala further said, “In many interviews, he has said that fans are a part of his family. We also consider him a family member. So, when he’s considering his next, we want him to please take our requests into account. We want him to work with well-established directors, production houses, music directors, and well-known singers, not just family members.” He tweeted the same a few days ago.

Mohit also had another complaint, “Unke aur unke fans ke beech mein ek deewaar bani hui hai. It is done by his own team; they don’t want Salman to come across any kind of criticism, even if it is constructive. They only inform Salman about things that he’d like to know. I am sure Salman is aware of the ground reality but the fact is that fans ki baat un tak pahuch nahin rahi.”

This encouraged the fans to come up with various trends on X. He said, “We were thinking of a strategy through which we can bypass his team and he can come to know directly about our plea and woes. Contacting his team is not a challenge. We can do it anytime. But we don’t want to as his team is useless.”

Mohit Kala admitted that he cried when tweeting the above-embedded tweet in support of Salman Khan. He got into tears at the end of this interview as well. He signed off by making an emotional appeal to his favourite superstar, “Aap nahin, toh koi bhi nahin. If you don’t make good films, we won’t watch films of any other actor as well.”
