Legacy can be quite a responsibility at times. That way, legendary singer Kishore Kumar's son Amit Kumar not only inherited his father’s passion for music but also successfully carved his own niche. After decades into the industry, he has worked with almost all prominent music composers you can name. But being Kishore Kumar's son was an identity he always carried.
As Amit Kumar sat for an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, he was asked how he dealt with the pressure. He began with telling us how so many music directors including Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, Rajesh Roshan, Bappi Lahiri, Anand-Milind and Anu Malik simply trusted him because he was Kishore Kumar's son. “I didn't have to work hard. They all had a feeling like, 'he is Kishore Kumar's son', let's try him out'. That way, I was very lucky," he said.
At the same time, he also reveals that it was legendary composer RD Burman who straightaway told him not to copy his father. "The first music director who told me over my face was RD Burman. He said, don't copy your father. You don't have to clone him. You're his son, right? Sing comfortable, sing in your own style. If you listen to ‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hai’, I don't sound like Kishore Kumar. I sound like Amit Kumar," the singer added.
‘Bade Achhe Lagte Hai’, featured in the 1976 film Balika Badhu, went on to become an iconic number, and one of Kumar's most popular tracks.
The singer also recalled the moment when he won an award after defeating his father Kishore Kumar. He said, "I defeated my father to win the Filmfare award for my song in Lovestory. Me, my father, Parveen Sultana and Asha ji were nominated for the award. I defeated everyone. At that time the reporter of Filmfare Gopalkrishna was very close to my father. He rang my father and said, 'Kishore, your son defeated you'. He(Kishore Kumar) was very happy. I was at Rajkot at the time. There was no mobile at that time. So my father rang me from Mumbai. He said 'Where are you? Congratulations. You just got the Filmfare award and you even defeated me.' I was so happy. But the biggest moment was that he gave me the award. When my father gave me the award the whole auditorium stood up. I was in tears and we embraced each other and stood there for a minute."
