Rajat Kapoor’s directorial venture Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa started streaming on ZEE5 from yesterday. Apart from him, the film also stars Vinay Pathak in the titular role, along with Ranvir Shorey, Palomi Ghosh, Saurabh Shukla, Waluscha De Sousa, among others. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Rajat Kapoor got talking about the film and more.
You often gravitate towards morally ambiguous characters. Was Sohrab written as a reflection of that fascination?
I suppose, yeah. It is in some way a continuation of those themes, a continuation of those people. And this time Sohrab Handa is not the only grey one, though he is the most obvious one, but almost every character in the film is many shades of grey. Everybody is self-centred in their own ways. Their immediate needs take priority over everything else. Though I believe these are all nice people, and likable too. And I think this complexity is what makes characters real.
The film explores emotional violence as much as physical crime. Was that always the core idea while writing?
Very much so. The physical violence erupts out of the emotional violence. That is at the heart of it.
There’s a theatrical quality to many of your films. Did the single-location setting remind you of your theatre roots?
Well that is definitely the challenge- to be restricted to a single space, and still to keep it engaging enough. The task, in fact, is to move as far away from theatricality as possible. To make shots that can only be done with a camera; to create spaces with the camera.
Sohrab is deeply unlikeable yet magnetic. How did you strike that balance on paper before casting? And what made Vinay Pathak the right choice for this role?
He is magnetic. Yes, what a force of nature. He actively repels people away. In fact, he makes it his business to be hateful; almost like a challenge to people around him. And yet, he has a vulnerable side to him and a caring one as well, with regards to some characters. As for Vinay, I thought it would be great to see him in this role, since he has almost never played a guy like this. And happy to report that he did wonders with this role.
