Nine years ago, Nikhita Gandhi made a stunning entry into Hindi film music with the title track of Raabta (2017), and since then, she hasn’t looked back. After getting her big break from A R Rahman with I (2015), she went on to lend her voice to several memorable Hindi film albums, including Jagga Jasoos (2017), Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017), Sanju (2018), Stree (2018), Kedarnath (2018), Luka Chuppi (2019), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (2023), Tiger 3 (2023), War 2 (2025), etc. Two of her biggest hits, ‘Qaafirana’ from Kedarnath and the title track of Raabta (2017) featured Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the talented singer spoke about the late actor and a lot more.

When asked if she had ever interacted with Sushant Singh Rajput, Nikhita Gandhi said, “I had met him and Kriti Sanon during the launch of Raabta. I didn’t have any interaction with him because it was a film premiere where conversations are brief and clinical. Also, as a musician, you don’t end up spending so much time with the cast. Most of the time, you don’t even cross paths. You end up communicating with composers, writers, or sometimes filmmakers. I have worked a lot on Anurag Basu’s films. I have met a lot and even hung out a lot. But that’s because he’s the director who is very involved in the music.”
The male playback singing in both ‘Qaafirana’ and ‘Raabta’ was by Arijit Singh. Nikhita has sung many more memorable tracks with the legendary singer like ‘Tere Pyaar Mein’ (Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar), ‘Leke Prabhu Ka Naam’ (Tiger 3), ‘Aavan Jaavan’ (War 2) etc. Interestingly, there is a distinct Bengali-Punjabi connection that both singers share.
Nikhita Gandhi smiled and said, “Yes, it’s a coincidence and a very cool one that we are both Punjabis raised in Bengal. His dad is Punjabi and so is my dad. I guess culturally, it does groom people differently when you’re raised in a certain way. The artistic Bengali culture is a part of your surroundings, and at the same time, you have a mixed bag of upbringing. So, that combination has its own magic (smiles).”
How does she react to Arijit Singh’s decision to quit playback singing? Nikhita explained, “He said that he’ll continue doing music; he implied that he’ll quit doing film singing. I am sure there are a lot of songs sung by him which are yet to release. Also, I think it’s just a stance he has taken. It’s awesome that he’s in a position to make that choice.”
