In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Madhuri Dixit reflected on how her earlier web projects like The Fame Game and Maja ma prepared her for the demanding storytelling format of Mrs. Deshpande. When asked whether the series came at the right time in her career, especially with the freedom that OTT platforms now offer, the actress wholeheartedly agreed.

Madhuri on Why OTT Arrived at the Perfect Time for Her
Speaking about the evolution of digital platforms, Madhuri explained how OTT allowed her—and many other women—to explore complex, layered characters without the constraints of traditional commercial filmmaking.
She said, "Oh yes. Absolutely. See OTT has done that for actresses, female actresses, and female leads. There's so much we can do without the constraint of it being a commercial thing. And add this, subtract that, you have to appeal to so much audience, so much money has to be collected and doing this and that. So you're free of all those bonds, and you can actually go out there and be adventurous and try different kind of roles. Also because you have created such a legacy, I just want to go on and on in the sense. I want to try something different, difficult, put myself in that uncomfortable kind of situation, where it will kind of help me to be a better actor and kind of explore more layers to myself."
Her words highlighted how OTT not only expands opportunities but also encourages seasoned actors like her to push boundaries and discover new facets of their craft.
A New Era for Women in the Industry
Madhuri also reflected on how drastically the industry has changed for women, both on and off screen.
She added, "It is a great time for women, also when we used to do films initially, there were hardly any women on the set. Just the actors, the head dressers and that's it. Those were the only women. Today you see them in every department. Which is amazing, and I think OTT is also opened up. It has basically democratised filmmaking, even for actors and new talent to be discovered. There is so much talent on OTT. It's not even funny."
Her observation reflected a broader shift in Indian entertainment, where women are now present across creative, technical, and leadership roles—something she views as long overdue and essential to the growth of storytelling.
As Mrs. Deshpande approaches its release on December 19 on JioHotstar, Madhuri Dixit continues to champion the creative freedom that OTT offers. From exploring challenging characters to witnessing the increased representation of women across all departments, she believes this era marks one of the most empowering phases for female artists. With her willingness to step outside her comfort zone, the actress once again proves why she remains one of the most respected and versatile performers in the industry.
