The Indian film industry is currently mourning the death of the legendary singer Asha Bhosle and thinking about her amazing career. She passed away yesterday April 12 in Mumbai at the age of 92. Veteran lyricist Sameer, in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, went down memory lane thinking about the late musical artiste.

“It’s an end of an era,” he said. “She has lived an era as she almost lived for 100 years. There was nobody like her and there won’t be. There are some people who are created by God for a specific reason. Amitabh Bachchan was born only to act. Sachin Tendulkar was born only to play cricket. Similarly, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle were born only to sing.”
Sameer is amazed by the versatility shown by Asha Bhosle in her career. “From ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ to ‘Dil Cheez Kya Hai Aap Meri Jaan Lijiye’, she sang every type of song, be it dance, hip-hop, sufi or even English songs. She won the Grammy Award; she didn’t leave anything to be achieved. She used to dance on stage on at this age. Can you imagine? At this age, people somehow get up from the bed. She had a tremendous will power. That’s because people like her reached this stage after a lot of hardships.”
Sameer also highlighted the discipline Bhosle followed throughout her career and always maintained herself. “Sometimes, when we used to visit her residence, we would hear the sound of riyaaz before entering. Singers of today’s era stop doing riyaaz after gaining some popularity. People like her are a devotee of music,” he said.
Asha Bhosle often got compared to her legendary sister Lata Mangeshkar. Sameer believes that she successfully came out of her shadow and created her own identity. “Whether it’s Abhishek Bachchan or someone else, it is difficult for anyone to come out of the shadows of someone great from the family. For Asha ji, to do something different from her legendary sister and reach the same pinnacle is a big thing. She didn’t venture on the same path as her sister. That’s how fine her thinking was. She had a career parallel to her sister. And the two have also sang song together. You can’t say who was better among the two. Both were equally good.”
Beyond her musical journey, Sameer is also all praise for Asha Bhosle as a human being. “She would always say what she felt,” he said. “Even when she is upset at you, her anger would vanish soon. She would always behave like a mother. Even after achieving so much, she was always down to earth. She was the same when I met her while doing a first song with her with Kishore (Kumar) da for the film Ab Aayega Maza (1984) and just two months ago when I visited her. She was never fake or egoistic. When you meet her, you don’t realize that she is the legendary Asha Bhosle. She would ask, ‘Kaisa hai tu? Kya khayega?’ She used to make amazing food.”
Sameer concluded saying, “Her death was peaceful. I would just like to say that may she rest in peace and may her family get the strength to pass through this period. Asha ji is not with us today but she will always be with us. Her voice will be heard by people of upcoming generations. I would like to advise the upcoming generation to consider her as an institution and to study her and her songs.”
