Kritika Kamra has been quite selective while choosing scripts, and that risk seems to have paid off, as most of her work has been widely acclaimed. Interestingly, she has done only three films so far, with most of her body of work comprising web series. Her upcoming venture, Matka King, too, is an eight-episode show. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Kritika Kamra spoke about this aspect of her career.

She said, “I have worked in TV, films and web and the medium doesn’t matter to me. I have realized that my approach doesn’t change towards my work. Obviously, the timings and work hours would change. But I just want to work with great filmmakers. That’s my only barometer. I got a chance to work with Nagraj Manjule. Before this, I worked with Anusha Rizvi in The Great Shamsuddin Family (2025). I started my OTT journey with Ali Abbas Zafar (Tandav). So, from the beginning, I have consciously chosen to work with the filmmakers that I appreciate or I am a fan of. That helps me get better at my craft.”
She added, “It doesn’t have to be a big name. It can be somebody with whom I vibe intellectually and whose worldview is the same as mine. And yes, all these choices are conscious. Otherwise, you’ll see me do the same in every film. It’s great when your show turns successful, but immediately, you start getting roles of the same kind. The number of criminal parts I got after Bambai Meri Jaan was crazy (smiles)! When I bagged Matka King, a lot of people assumed that I was again playing a gangster. They felt that ‘Bombay-based period show hai, illegal ho raha hai toh main kuch galat hi kar rahi hoon’! I assured them that it’s not the case and the show offers much more than that. Nevertheless, I like surprising people.”
Kritika Kamra’s well-received 2025 show, Saare Jahan Se Accha, revolved around a resilient Indian spy trying to thwart Pakistan while operating on its soil. When Dhurandhar was released a few months later, parallels were drawn between the two.
Kritika Kamra admitted that a lot of people did tell her that Dhurandhar reminded them of Saare Jahan Se Accha. She also noted, “Dhurandhar is a stylized way of seeing how a spy works. Saare Jahan Se Accha was a stripped-down version, as it's not glamorous at all. Hamare show mein koi entry scenes nahin tha, koi gaane nahin the (smiles). It’s interesting that we can hold space for both these kinds of storytelling, where the milieu is pretty much the same. It’s also interesting that we live in times where we can do both these things.”
She continued, “I want to explore more and I want to do more films. It doesn’t really matter if that film releases in a theatre or on the smaller screen as long as I really like what I am doing in it. I won’t do a big film because I feel ‘ab film karni hai’. I have to really like the part, the director – all those things – and that’s why I have been slow and steady with my choices.”
When asked about her next, Kritika Kamra revealed, “I have just started prepping for an indie film, made by new people. It’s going to be an interesting collaboration for me. I absolutely fell in love with the script and my part. It requires me to go through physical training, which I have never done before. I have to really prep properly before we can start filming. This is the film where I am going to concentrate for the next couple of months.”
