Karan Johar and Guneet Monga Kapoor have joined hands as producers for the upcoming high-octane action drama KILL. The film is directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, and it stars debutant Lakshya along with Raghav Juyal. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, the director said that he is too pleased with the way he has received support from Karan and Guneet. He also said that they also gave him complete freedom to shape the film the way he wants.
“Guneet and Karan have been involved right from the beginning,” said Nikhil. “But at the same time, I got so much creative freedom that there was absolutely no interference. There was a lot of support. It is so challenging to make such a film because such a film hasn’t been made before. So, we don’t have a reference point. The support and handholding by the producers were very good. They supported us with whatever we wanted.”
KILL takes place fully inside a running train and the film is loaded with action scenes. But Nikhil didn’t want to completely rely on stunt and action directors to shoot the film. “I had never made an action film before,” he said. “So, I started meeting action directors. In India, action directors shoot the film. And if my film is 70 to 80% action, I can’t give it all to the action director to shoot the whole film. Then I will just have to sit aside on a chair. I had to convince them that I wanted them to choreograph the action sequences and I will shoot the rest of the portions. That was a bit difficult.”
Nikhil is happy that both Karan and Guneet decided to take the services of an international name for the film’s action. “The producers said that let’s try and get the best whom we can from all over the world and why are we limiting it to only India. Then we got Se-young Oh from South Korea who has done a lot of films as action co-ordinator, including Snowpiercer and a lot of legendary films. It was the producers’ willingness that we should put the best foot forward.”
Building a train set for another challenge for the makers as it needed to be very specific. “I knew I had to revolve the camera 360 degrees,” said Nikhil. “And as there is action, people will keep falling. The set of the train should be such that it collapses and then joins again. Just like how it happens in Transformers. For 4-5 months, we had to do R n D on how this set can be. So, we made miniature sets of 1 foot, 6 foot and then 12 foot. We made the walls such that they collapse and stand back in the same shot. The set itself was a marvel. We were pushing the boundaries. All this becomes possible when your producers are visionary.”
KILL has been screened at the Red Sea Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival last year. It will release in India this year.
